BOONE - The Ballard boys’ tennis team advanced to substate and qualified both of its doubles teams for state at the Class 1A district meet Friday at McHose Park in Boone.
Ballard’s No. 1 doubles team of Caleb Hamerlinck and Max Olsan took first and its No. 2 team of Seth Wohlgemuth and Chase Winterboer came in second during the doubles tournament.
Hamerlinck and Olsan convincingly won their way to the semifinals. They opened by sweeping South Hardin’s team of Thomas Siephs and Brock Lu, 6-0 and 6-1, and Boone’s Nick Rose and Brandon Rouse, 6-1 and 6-0, to reach the semifinals.
In the semifinals, Hamerlinck and Olsan whipped North Polk’s Ethan Knight and Gabe Laizure, posting a pair of 6-0 shutouts.
Wohlgemuth and Winterboer blanked Webster City’s Evan Estlund and Chase Black in the first round and Saydel’s Billy Burr and Kaleb Jaschke in the quarterfinals, winning both matches by 6-0 and 6-0 scores. They won a thrilling battle with Boone’s Connor Patterson and Joey Zehr in the semifinals.
Wohlgemuth and Winterboer dropped a 7-6 battle in the first set against Patterson and Zehr, but came back with a pair of 6-4 victories to take the match and advance to the finals.
That set up a Bomber battle for the championship. Hamerlinck and Olsan prevailed, 6-1 and 6-0. Hamerlinck became the first Bomber to qualify for state three times, Olsan tied the school record for career wins with 79.
Both teams qualified for the 1A boys’ state doubles tournament.
“Together (Hamerlinck and Olsan) played really well Friday as the No. 1 seed,” Ballard head boys’ tennis coach Matt Fjelland said. “I’m extremely happy for Chase and Seth getting an opportunity to play at the state meet in a couple weeks. They deserve to be there!”
The 1A boys’ state singles and doubles tournament takes place May 24 and 25 at the Byrnes Tennis Park in Waterloo.
In singles play at the district meet, Ballard’s Alex Upah went 2-2 to place fourth and Logan Gogerty also picked up a victory for the Bombers.
Upah swept Boone’s Jacob Sternberg, 6-4 and 6-1, in the first round. In the quarterfinals, Upah rallied from a 6-3 opening-set loss South Hardin’s Cauy Teske to take the next two sets by identical 6-2 scores and advance to the semifinals.
In the semifinals, Upah went up against top seed and defending 1A state runner-up Evan Moon of North Polk and was dealt a pair of 6-0 losses. That put Upah in the third-place match, where he fell to Iowa Falls-Alden’s Saul Sanchez by 6-4 and 7-5 decisions.
Gogerty scored a pair of impressive 6-0 victories over Webster City’s Seth Nelson in the first round. Gogerty came up short in the quarterfinals to Boone’s Ben Craven in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-1.
Ballard ended up winning the district championship with 27 points to advance to the 1A substate round. North Polk was second out of eight teams with 17 points.
