HUXLEY - Ben Stocksleger got Ballard going and his teammates finished the job in a 6-2 Bomber victory over Boone in boys’ soccer Monday at Rich Strouse Field in Huxley.

Stocksleger put up a hat-trick with three goals. He was responsible for the first three Bomber scores, getting them out to a 3-1 lead.

“It’s really good to see everybody else following after something I did,” Stocksleger said. “I really feel good about that.”

Stocksleger’s first goal was a 30-yard shot that went high and sailed over the head of Boone keeper Tristan Thomas and into the net. He dribbled through the Boone defense and punched in a short shot for his second goal, then converted a direct kick for his final score.

Obi Soash scored Ballard’s final goal of the first half after following a Landon Fortner shot that went off the top cross bar.

Connor Utley found the net a little over 12 minutes into the second half for Ballard’s fifth goal. Fortner capped the scoring with a beautiful header off a corner kick midway through the second half.

“Their defender was right on my hip and then I saw it coming in,” Fortner said. “Somebody missed with their head and it landed perfectly with me and I put it right in the corner.”

The victory put Ballard at 2-10. It was the Bombers’ first victory since their season opener, a 2-0 victory over Collins-Maxwell.

“We really needed this,” Stocksleger said. “It’s been tough, but we’ve really improved.”

Ballard closes out the regular season this week at Carroll and Bondurant-Farrar. Class 2A substate play beginning next Monday at Newton.

“We really needed this win,” Fortner said. “Especially with our other two conference games coming up this week and then our substate against Newton. I think it’s a really good boost and hopefully we can carry it into the next couple games.”

Boone fell to 0-16. Collin Mitchell scored a goal for the Toreadors in the first half and Jeremiah Gaye added a goal in the second half.
