HUXLEY - Ballard did some last-minute preparing for districts and building for the future in an 11-0 victory over Saydel Monday at the Ballard Tennis Courts in Huxley.

Facing an overmatched Saydel team, Ballard saved its top four singles players — Caleb Hamerlinck, Max Olsan, Seth Wohlgemuth and Chase Winterboer - for doubles play. Hamerlinck and Olsan will be Ballard’s No. 1 doubles team at the Class 1A district meet in Boone Wednesday, and Wohlgemuth and Winterboer will be the No. 2 team.

That gave Ballard an opportunity to move No. 5 singles player Alex Upah up to the No. 1 spot against Saydel.

“That’s a big goal I’ve had,” Upah said of playing in the No. 1 position. “To finally reach that felt pretty good. It was a good experience preparing me for districts, because the competition at districts is going to be greater than what I’ve seen all year.”

Upah whipped Saydel veteran Zach Bobenhouse in a pro-8 set by an 8-1 score.

Logan Gogerty and Carter Harms — both of whom have spent time in the No. 6 spot — also went up to the No. 2 and No. 3 spots respectively.

Gogerty blanked the Eagles Dylan Walker, 8-0. Harms whipped Chaise Martin, 8-1.

“It was a really good learning experience compared to playing the No. 6 singles or not singles at all,” Harms said.

Gogerty and Harms have also played a lot of doubles tennis together.

“We’ve gotten some experience at the No. 3 doubles,” Gogerty said. “We usually play pretty good together.”

Kyler Watson has seen time in the No. 6 singles spot as well. He moved up to No. 4 Monday and downed Saydel’s Billy Burr by an 8-3 score.

Nathan Wuestenberg whipped Saydel’s Ron Kouski in the No. 5 match, 8-1. Senior Peyton Culp was victorious in the first varsity singles match of his career, winning the No. 6 match over Kaleb Jaschke by an 8-1 decision.

“Those kids who might be our varsity lineup next year get great experience,” Ballard head boys’ tennis coach Matt Fjelland said. “Next year these are the courts they’ll be playing on — courts 1, 2 and 3. It’s good for them.”

In doubles play, Hamerlinck and Olsan coasted to an 8-1 win over Bobenhouse and Martin in the No. 1 match and Wohlgemuth and Winterboer skunked Walker and Kouski, 8-0, in the No. 2 match, as they get ready for the district meet in Boone.

“We’re hoping Caleb and Max and Seth and Chase can get the No. 1 and 2 seeds,” Fjelland said. “We’re hoping they can get some points where our team can advance. That’s our goal is to win the district.”

Ballard saw three other doubles teams roll against Saydel.

Josh Clinton and Ryan Carlin pulled off an 8-1 victory over Burr and Kobe Moriarty in the No. 3 doubles match and Joe Fletcher and Tim Kruger rolled to an 8-2 triumph over Jaschke and Cole Jaschke in the No. 4 match. Noah Nebbe and Hunter Rose scored an 8-1 win over Kenny Michael and Caden Tague in the No. 5 match.

The victory put Ballard at 13-1 on the season. The 1A district meet in Boone begins at 8 a.m. Wednesday at McHose Park Tennis Courts.
