DES MOINES - Individual distance running events enabled Ballard to edge Nevada for sixth place out of 11 teams at the Saydel Classic girls’ track meet April 22 at Saydel High School in Des Moines.


The Bombers picked up 33 of their 39 points in the 3,000, 1,500, 800 and 400-meter races. They ended up beating Nevada by one point for sixth.


Ellie Twedt won the 3,000 for Ballard with a strong time of 11 minutes, 16.81 seconds. She beat Gilbert’s Hannah Thatcher by 20.23 seconds for the victory.


Twedt also won silver and teammate Josie Fleischmann took fifth in the 800 with respective times of 2:33.86 and 2:40.84. Indianola’s Ashley Rockhold won the race in 2:30.31.


Caitlin Maher gave Ballard an excellent runner-up time of 5:16.25 in the 1,500, just beating out the 5:18.00 showing by North Polk’s Lucy Schaffer for the silver. Indianola’s Jadyn Forbes ran a 5:10.82 to get the victory.


Carley Wilson stepped up to turn in her best 400 time of the season to get third for Ballard. Wilson clocked in at 1:08.29 to place only behind the 1:05.51 by Montezuma’s Ash Krousie and 1:05.99 by Indianola’s Alyvia Fuller.


Ballard also placed fourth in the distance medley and fifth in the shuttle hurdle. The Bomber weren’t at full strength in most of their relays, as several athletes were out of action due to soccer.


Rachel Newell, Rori Olson, Natalie Maher and Caitlin Maher finished the distance medley in 4:46.80. Taiylor Wright, Alexis Kluender, Olson and Sarah Stolte ran the shuttle hurdle in 1:14.43.


Indianola won the team championship with 136 points and Bondurant-Farrar took second with 91. Gilbert came in third with 74 points, North Polk fourth with 58 and Montezuma fifth with 52.
