WATERLOO — The Collins-Maxwell girls’ basketball team used a big second quarter to put away Waterloo Christian, 57-20, Feb. 5 at Waterloo.


The Spartans went on a huge 25-8 run over the second quarter to build a 35-14 lead at the half. They padded their lead by 10 more points after three quarters to sew up the game and finish the regular season with a 14-5 record.


Collins-Maxwell had 23 steals and a 34-22 rebounding advantage. The Spartans held the Regents without a free throw or a 3-pointer.


Reagan Franzen led Collins-Maxwell with 16 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and three steals. Mikayla Markley had 13 points and one block; Josie Wierson 12 points, seven rebounds, six steals and four assists and Mikayla Houge eight points, five rebounds, four steals and three assists.


Allison White had eight points, seven rebounds and five steals for Waterloo Christian.

TRAER — Collins-Maxwell survived a big scare from North Tama Feb. 4, pulling off a 53-52 win over the Redhawks at Traer.


The game was a back-and-forth affair.


Collins-Maxwell led by nine after one quarter, but North Tama tied the score at 27-27 by halftime. The Spartans went back up by five after three quarters and the Redhawks made one final push before falling a point short.


Collins-Maxwell secured second place in the Iowa Star Conference South Division. The Spartans ended up 8-2 in the conference and they improved to 13-5 overall.


Free throws played a huge role the win. Collins-Maxwell went 22 of 33 from the charity stripe and North Tama only got to the line six times, making two.


Reagan Franzen turned in a monster game to help Collins-Maxwell avoid the upset.


Franzen went for 24 points after making 5 of 7 field goals and 13 of 19 free throws. She also pulled down 14 rebounds, dished out three assists and came up with two steals and blocks apiece.


Mikayla Houge added 10 points, five rebounds, five steals and four assists. Mikayla Markley scored eight points, Josie Wierson recorded six points and rebounds apiece and Alexis Houge tallied five points, four steals and a block.


North Tama dropped to 2-18 overall and 0-10 in the ISC South Division. Takoa Kopriva had 15 points and eight steals and Katie Kopriva 13 points and four steals for the Redhawks.
