PLEASANTVILLE — Three members of the Collins-Maxwell wrestling team fell one spot shy of qualifying for districts at the Class 1A sectional meet in Pleasantville Saturday.


Carter Davis (106 pounds), Jacob Pierick (120) and Clayton Leslie (132) each came in third for the Spartans. Collins-Maxwell came in eighth as a team with 46 points.


Davis received a bye, then lost by fall in the semifinals to Pleasantville’s Devon Luing. In the third-place match, Davis came back to defeat Martensdale St. Marys’ Chris Craig by a 13-7 decision, but he was unable to get a wrestleback, finishing the season at 9-18.


Pierick picked up a bye and lost by a 12-3 major decision to Martensdale St. Marys’ Cael Cassady. In the third-place match, Pierick bounced back to pin Pleasantville’s Brynn Miller in three minutes, 11 seconds, but he was unable to earn a wrestleback, ending 17-13.


Leslie completed the season with a 10-18 record. He also opened sectionals with a bye, then lost by fall to Lynnville-Sully’s C.J. Snethen.


In the third-place match, Leslie whipped North Mahaska’s Noah Thomas by fall in 51 seconds, but he couldn’t get a wrestleback.


Joseph Butcher was Collins-Maxwell’s only other competitor at the meet. He took fifth at 126 with an 0-2 record to end the season at 10-24.


Pleasantville won the team championship with 191 points. Colfax-Mingo was a close second with 183 points and Martensdale St. Marys scored 165.5 to take third.
