MAXWELL — The Collins-Maxwell girls’ basketball team used a strong finish to take down rival Baxter, 49-35, Saturday on senior night in Maxwell.


The Spartans outscored the Bolts 28-11 over the final two quarters to improve to 12-5 overall and 7-2 in the Iowa Star Conference South Division. They trailed 24-21 at the half after giving up 15 points in the second quarter, but pulled ahead by a point by the end of the third quarter and dominated the final eight minutes — finishing the game on a 17-4 run.


Collins-Maxwell shot 48 percent and held Baxter to 28-percent shooting from the field. The Spartans also racked up 26 steals and held a 34-23 rebounding advantage.


Senior Josie Wierson was huge in the win for Collins-Maxwell. Wierson went for a game-high 18 points on 9 of 14 shooting from the field and she also had nine rebounds, four steals and two blocks.


Mikayla and Alexis Houge both netted eight points and Mikayla also had seven steals and four assists. Reagan Franzen finished with five points and six rebounds and Gracie Cheville three points, six steals and five assists.


Baxter fell to 6-11 overall and 4-6 in the conference. Kaylin Van Ryswyk had 10 points and five rebounds, McKenzie Eslinger and Sophie Meyer six points apiece and Caitlyn Bruntz five steals for the Bolts.

CHURDAN — Playing in its first game in two weeks, Collins-Maxwell showed some rust in a 48-36 loss at Paton-Churdan Jan. 31.


The Spartans only made 11 of 39 field goals and finished with just 20 rebounds, falling to 11-5 on the season. It was only their second setback in 11 games.


Collins-Maxwell was hurt by a poor third quarter. The Spartans led 20-18 at the half, but were outscored 13-4 in the third period and never recovered.


Reagan Franzen had nine points and four rebounds and Mikayla Markley eight points and three steals for Collins-Maxwell. Mikayla Houge, Shasta Moody and Brooke Christie scored four points apiece and Gracie Cheville added four assists and three steals for the Spartans.
