ALLEMAN - The North Polk Girls’ Basketball team defeated Roland-Story on Friday, Feb. 1, at North Polk High School.


The team honored four seniors: Katie Bergland, Katie Brown, Katie Scott and Carolyn Steffen and two senior managers, Katryn Halterman and Baily Hougham, on senior night. After a tight first quarter, the Comets were up 7-4. Maggie Phipps had five points while Carolyn Steffen chipped in two.


The Comets’ offense broke out in the second quarter and jumped to a 22-13 lead at half. Katie Scott drained a 3-pointer to open the half and Roland Story could not keep up. The score after the third quarter was 34-24.


An excellent fourth quarter, with 16 points spread around among the players, put the Comets’ score at 50. The final score was 50-36, moving the Comets to 17-1 overall and 11-0 in conference play. Junior Jaedon Murphy put up 18 points, had 14 rebounds and two assists. Sophomore Maggie Phipps had 13 points and five rebounds.


Senior Katie Scott said “We knew Roland-Story’s tendencies coming into the game, we worked hard in practice all week to prepare and be ready for the game.” Jaedon Murphy said “I’m excited for the post season to see where our team goes. We are working toward our goal of a state title; it is something we have been working for all season and continue to work on each day in practice.” With three games left in the regular season, the Comets are looking to make a good long run in the postseason.
