PERRY — The Ballard girls' basketball team used an active defense and strong rebounding to pound Perry, 52-19, Friday at Perry.

The Bombers, ranked No. 11 in Class 4A, overcame an off 30-percent shooting night from the field by forcing 32 Perry turnovers and posting a 42-29 rebounding advantage. They also held Perry to 25-percent shooting from the field to improve to 17-2 on the season and 11-1 in the Raccoon River Conference.

Ballard gradually pulled away during the game. The Bombers led 24-9 at the half and went up by 24 points after three quarters.

Brooke Loewe went for 16 points, eight rebounds, four steals and three assists for Ballard in the win. Josie Fleischmann added eight points, four steals and three rebounds and Meg Rietz had seven points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Maggie Larson chipped in six points and Molly Ihle had five points, four rebounds, four steals and two assists. Cassidy Thompson tacked on four points, five rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocks and Rachel Wohlgemuth, Karlee Ahrenholtz and Grace Hill scored two points apiece.

Perry fell to 1-17 overall and 0-11 in the conference. Molly Lutmer scored 12 points, Gabby West five and Quinn Whiton two for the Bluejays.

CARLISLE — Great defense in the second half helped No. 11 (Class 4A) Ballard outlast Carlisle, 40-33, for a Raccoon River Conference road victory Jan. 31 at Carlisle.

The Bombers held the Wildcats to just seven points over the final two quarters. The two teams were tied at the half, 26-26, but Ballard went up by two after three quarters, then put up 10 points in the fourth quarter to pull away for its eighth-consecutive victory.

The Bombers improved to 16-2 overall and 10-1 in the RRC with the victory. They overcame a 32-percent shooting night from the field by forcing 21 turnovers and only committing 10.

Ballard also made 9 of 16 free throws to Carlisle's 4 of 10 showing from the line. The Bombers also made five 3-pointers to the Wildcats' three.

Molly Ihle had 18 points, nine rebounds, two assists and two steals for Ballard in the win. Josie Fleischmann added seven points and four steals and Brooke Loewe seven points, three steals and two assists.

Maggie Larson chipped in four points, four rebounds and three steals and Meg Rietz four points and two assists.

Carlisle fell to 7-8 overall and 4-6 in the conference Molly Hoekstra went for a game-high 20 points for the Wildcats and Kennedy Preston added eight points.
