MAXWELL - The Collins-Maxwell girls’ basketball team jumped all over Grand View Christian in the first half en route to a 66-24 victory Jan. 17 at Maxwell.


The Spartans outscored the Thunder 21-2 in the first quarter. By halftime, their lead had swelled to 36-7 and they coasted home to their third victory in a row and ninth in 10 games to improve to 11-4 on the season.


Collins-Maxwell had 47 rebounds, 16 offensive rebounds and 10 steals. The Spartans also shot 52 percent from the field, and made 7 of 12 3-pointers and 13 of 19 free throws.


Mikayla Markley had the hot hand individually for Collins-Maxwell. Markley torched the Grand View Christian defense from outside, making 5 of 8 3-pointers and finishing with a game-high 21 points.


Gracie Cheville added nine points, six rebounds and six assists and Reagan Franzen seven points, nine rebounds, four assists, three steals and a block. Mikayla Houge chipped in eight points and seven assists.

GARWIN - Collins-Maxwell took advantage of a huge edge at the foul line to top GMG, 57-49, Jan. 15 at Garwin.


The Spartans made 20 of 31 free throws during the game. Conversely, GMG was was held to just one attempt all game from the line.


That significant edge helped Collins-Maxwell overcome GMG’s better shooting from the field (40 to 37 percent) and seven Wolverine 3-pointers to just one for the Spartans. Collins-Maxwell also owned the glass, outrebounding GMG 45-30.


The Spartans led 24-22 at the half. They went up by four after three quarters then put up 19 points over the final eight minutes to hold off the Wolverines and improve to 10-4 overall and 6-2 in the Iowa Star Conference South Division.


Reagan Franzen and Mikayla Houge both posted a double-double for Collins-Maxwell. Franzen had 13 points and 17 rebounds and Houge 15 points and 10 boards.


Franzen also accounted for three steals and two assists and Houge dished out four assists.


Mikayla Markley scored nine points, Gracie Cheville tallied eight points and six assists and Alexis Houge finished with eight points for the Spartans. Josie Wierson chipped in four points, six rebounds and three steals.


GMG fell to 7-7 overall and 2-5 in the conference. Emily Vaughn had 14 points, Zoe Duncan 11 points and seven rebounds and Kelsey Vaverka seven points, seven rebounds and three steals for the Wolverines.
