North Polk Wrestling Competes in 2 Duals and Hosts Tournament in December


JEWELL - The Comets finished out December with two duals and a tournament. On Dec. 13, the team traveled to South Hamilton for a Triangular with South Hamilton and Collins-Maxwell. The Comets won both duals, beating South Hamilton 59-24 and besting Collins-Maxwell 66-9. This put the Comets at 3-6 on the season.


ALLEMAN- On Dec. 15, the Comets hosted the Comet Invitational Tournament. The Comets took sixth place overall. Three Comet wrestlers competed for championships and six other Comets competed to place.


Isaac Larson (113) claimed a championship medal with a fall over Carlisle’s Pogue. Chance Bockenstedt (138) lost by an 8-4 decision in the championship match to Clarke’s Domina to get the silver medal at that weight. Logan Engebretson (152) also earned a silver medal, coming in second to Hudson’s Rodriguez, who took the 7-6 decision over Engebretson.


Other Comets on the podium were Ryan Davidson (120) earning the third place medal. Parker Frey (145), Dylan Meiners (160), and Josiah DeValois (170) finished in fifth place while Luke Cory (132) and Jaren Buls (285) each took sixth place.


ALLEMAN – In the last dual meet before the holidays, the Comets hosted Creston and South Tama. These two teams proved to be tough competition for the Comets. Moving to 3-8 on the season, the Comets lost to Creston 17-57 and to South Tama 12-53. Two Comet wrestlers came out ahead on the night. Parker Frey (145) was undefeated with a pin over Creston’s Brayton Chestnut and a defeat of South Tama’s Garrett Arp. Logan Engebretson picked up a 17-2 technical fall over Creston’s Hayden Green and a defeat against South Tama’s Vincent Branan.


Comet wrestlers take third at North Polk Round Robin Tournament


ALLEMAN – The first day back in action after the winter break saw the Comet wrestling team hosting Greene County, Grinnell, Mount Ayr, Shenandoah and Waukee for a Round Robin Tournament on Friday, Jan 4. The Comets had a good showing, taking third place overall.


Seven Comet wrestlers stood on the podium at the end of the night. Five of those Comet wrestlers competed in the championship match at their weight, including the two champions Logan Engebretson (152) and Dylan Meiners (160). Chance Bockenstedt (138), Parker Frey (145), and Ryan Davidson (120) each took second. Andrew Haney (132) and Ben Ewing (220) both came in third.


Logan Engebretson took first in the 152 lb. bracket, racking up three falls, one major decision and a decision over his opponents. Engebretson’s falls came against White of Mount Ayr, Yates of Waukee and Kafer of Greene County. Dylan Meiners also took first place for the Comets. Meiners (160) received two byes in his bracket, while also finishing off Lovall of Grinnell by fall, Miller of Waukee by fall and earning a decision over Ward of Greene County.


Ryan Davidson came away with a major decision over Waukee’s Tallant and a fall over Mount Ayr’s Fleharty, but ended the night in second after a loss to Grinnell’s Brock Beck. Chance Bockenstedt earned two falls over Waukee’s Schneider and Mount Ayr’s Lane to get to the championship match, where he came in second after a hard-fought match against Grinnell’s Eli Rose. Parker Frey came home with the silver medal after a win against Gruman of Grinnell and pinning Hembry of Waukee and Allumbaugh of Shenandoah, but taking the loss against Greene County’s Will Hansen.


SAYDEL– Jan. 8th saw the Comet wrestling team competing in a double dual against Saydel (S), Nodaway Valley (NV), and Van Meter (VM). The Comets came away 2-1 on the night, beating Saydel 60-12 and Nodaway Valley 50-30 and losing to Van Meter 23-49. This improved the Comets to 6-8 on the season.


Four Comets finished the evening without a loss. Ryan Davidson (120) stuck both Jaxon Christensen of Nodaway Valley and Brock Button of Van Meter. Saydel was open at 120. Chance Bockenstedt (138) earned a fall over Colby Harris (NV), a 16-1 technical fall over Nick Wilson (VM). Saydel was open at 138. Parker Frey (145) earned the 15-0 technical fall over Ryan Wilson (NV) and came away with a 6-5 decision over Quinn Corcoran (VM) and a 7-2 decision over Jake Van Houten (S). Logan Engebretson (152) was the final undefeated Comet wrestler on the night coming away with a fall over Austin Pyles (S), an 11-4 major decision over Austin Wilson (NV) and a 13-8 decision over Bryce Cole (VM).


ALLEMAN – On Jan. 10, the North Polk wrestling team hosted a double dual competing against Saydel, Gilbert and Clarion-Goldfield Dows. The Comets improved their dual record to 7-10 with a dual win over Saydel, 64-18. The Comets lost to Clarion-Goldfield Dows, 12-65, and Gilbert, 38-42.


With the tough competition on the night, the Comets only had one undefeated wrestler. Logan Engebretson (152) defeated Gilbert’s Carson Johnson, Saydel’s Austin Pyles and Clarion-Goldfield Dows’ Kamren Jergenson.


JEFFERSON (January 15th) - Comet wrestlers traveled to Jefferson for a double dual against Greene County (GC), West Central Valley (WCV), and Roland-Story (RS) on January 10. The Comets came away with two dual wins, beating West Central Valley 48-30 and Roland-Story 48-31. The Comets lost to Greene County, 16-39. North Polk improved their dual record to 9-11 on the season with a 5-4 record against conference opponents.


Chance Bockenstedt (138) stuck all three of his opponents on the night, going undefeated. Logan Engebretson (152) earned a 16-2 major decision over Colby Kafer (GC), a fall over Louden Foster (WCV) and a forfeit by Roland-Story. Dylan Meiners wrestled two matches at 160, pinning his opponent from Roland-Story and getting a decision over Joel Ward (GC). Meiners wrestled one match at 170, sticking Gunner Powell of West Central Valley.
