MAXWELL - The Collins-Maxwell football team continued its late-season surge Friday by handing Twin Cedars a 54-20 drubbing during senior night at Maxwell.

The Spartans exploded for 30 points in the first quarter and never looked back, earning its first home victory in the short history of the program.

“Our team came to play,” Collins-Maxwell head football coach Cory Crnkovich said. “The seniors and the rest of the team wanted to get our first win as a program at home. They had the mindset that they were going to win when we took the field. They went into it telling themselves there is no way we are losing this game on senior night.”

The victory was Collins-Maxwell’s third in four games after an 0-5 start. The Spartans are now 3-6 overall and 3-3 in 8-man District 5.

Collins-Maxwell piled up 421 yards of offense. The Spartans threw for 253 yards and ran for 168.

“This was our first complete game,” Crnkovich said. “We were balanced on the offensive side of the ball. We ran the ball well and we also had a very solid passing attack. Our o-line did their job all night. Our wideouts made plays when we needed it. Everyone stepped up. Friday was proof of what we can do when we stay disciplined and focused for four quarters.”

Kadin Bennett completed 10 of 16 passes for 236 yards and three touchdowns and Mason Markley connected on two passes for 17 yards. Caleb Fullerton ran 23 times for 138 yards and three touchdowns and also caught a 42-yard touchdown pass and Brett Livesay made five catches for 131 yards and a touchdown.

John Kasper added four catches for 62 yards and Simon McKinney made two grabs for 18.

The Spartans also performed well on defense and special teams.

Collins-Maxwell forced an impressive six turnovers — with three interceptions and fumble recoveries apiece. Fullerton also returned a kick 65 yards for a score and Livesay had one touchback on kickoffs.

“Our defense was on fire,” Crnkovich said. “We had three picks and one fumble on defense. We also had two fumble recoveries on special teams, which stepped our offense up in scoring position.”

Livesay recorded 6.5 tackles, two interceptions and a fumble recovery and Simon McKinney had 13.5 tackles and a fumble recovery. Kasper added six tackles and an interception, Rylee Scott six tackles and a fumble recovery and Fullerton 8.5 stops.

Collins-Maxwell wraps up the season this week at Melcher-Dallas (4-4, 4-2).

“Our boys have one thing in mind — that’s finishing third in the district,” Crnkovich said. “They win Friday and they can achieve that. They want to finish on a three-game winning streak going into the offseason. This team wants to finish what they started. That’s our motto for this week.”

The Spartan-Saint game will be at 7 p.m. on Friday at Melcher.
