ALLEMAN - North Polk did its best to keep pace with a powerful Carlisle rushing attack Friday, but the Comets weren’t able to slow the Wildcats down enough in a 35-21 loss on senior night at Alleman.
North Polk gave up 410 yards rushing and was outgained by 168 total yards during the game. The Comets were especially sluggish early, falling behind 21-0.
But North Polk found a way to remain competitive over the final three quarters. The Comets pulled within 21-14 at the half, and limited Carlisle to 14 points in the second half.
“(I) Was really proud of how we hung in the game after getting out to a slow start,” North Polk head football coach Evan Groepper said.
Colten Parkins threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Fausch and found Quinten Sommers from six yards out in the second quarter for North Polk. Parkins hooked up with Sommers on a 23-yard scoring strike in the final three minutes of the fourth quarter for the final Comet touchdown.
Parkins ended up completing 16 of 27 passes for 236 yards and three touchdowns without an interception.
That helped keep the Comets in the game after they were held to 77 yards on the ground.
“We did a really nice job in the passing game,” Groepper said. “We struggled to run the ball, which made it difficult to maintain possessions.”
Sommers had nine receptions for 124 yards and Fausch four for 75. Colin Swygman added one catch for 17 yards, Trevor Mathis made a 13-yard reception and Dylan Meiners had one grab for seven yards.
Parkins did most of the work on the ground for North Polk, finishing with 61 yards rushing on 15 carries.
Defensively, Jeff Lamp made 11.5 tackles and a fumble recovery and Parkins recovered a fumble and made five tackles. Caleb Lomica added 7.5 tackles and a tackle for loss, Fausch had six tackles and Thomas Jones made one tackle for loss.
“Defensively, we battled at the line of scrimmage but needed to tackle better to get stops,” Groepper said.
Nic Goodhue ran for 113 yards and one touchdown, Ethan Reed picked up 105 yards on the ground, Tegan Wyckoff finished with 100 yards and two touchdowns rushing and Bryce Murray tacked on 92 yards and a score running the ball for Carlisle.
Wyckoff also completed 3 of 7 passes for 71 yards and a score and Nolan Brunsen made a 40-yard touchdown reception for the Wildcats, who improved to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in Class 3A District 8.
North Polk will take a 4-4 overall record and 1-3 district mark into its final game of the season this Friday against a Ballard team that is also 4-4 overall and 1-3 in the district.
“Great way to end the season — with a game against a neighboring school district,” Groepper said.
“The kids will be excited and ready to play.”
North Polk will play Ballard at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Rich Strouse Field in Huxley.
