MAXWELL — The Collins-Maxwell football team had a great finish against AGWSR in its 8-man District 5 opener Friday, but the Spartans had too much ground to make up in a 43-22 loss.

Collins-Maxwell (0-4, 0-1) outscored AGWSR (1-2, 1-0) 22-0 in the fourth quarter. But AGWSR scored 29 points in the second quarter to take a 36-0 lead at the half, and the Cougars added another touchdown in the third to put the game away.

Caleb Fullerton had touchdown runs from four and 27 yards out and Mason Markley found John Kasper on a 7-yard touchdown pass for Collins-Maxwell in the fourth quarter. But the Spartans had no success moving the football in the prior three quarters, finishing with only seven yards rushing and 98 total yards.

“Offensively, we couldn’t get anything going,” Collins-Maxwell head football coach Cory Crnkovich said. “We put our defense in bad situations and gave them good field position. We had one of our players that got dinged up and their offense capitalized on it. We need to get better in the second quarter so we can be in the game.”

Crnkovich said the Spartans must get better up front in order to move the football.

“We weren’t getting off the ball,” Crnkovich said. “We couldn’t do anything in the first half because our line was making little mistakes.”

Fullerton ran for 54 yards on 13 carries. The other four Spartan ball carriers all had negative yards on the ground.

Markley came in for injured starting quarterback Kadin Bennett to complete 4 of 10 passes for 69 yards.

“Mason Markley stepped up on offense when Bennett was injured,” Crnkovich said. “He made the right reads and put us in scoring position. He led the three scoring drives that we had.”

Bennett was 3 of 15 for 22 yards through the air. Livesay made three receptions for 62 yards and A.J. Smith had two grabs for 21.

On defense, Collins-Maxwell limited AGWSR to 218 yards on 40 plays.

“I loved seeing our defense compete,” Crnkovich said. “The score might not have showed how well we played on that side of the ball. We gave up a big punt return and set them up on the 5-yard line. The next two series our defense stopped them.”

Fullerton made 9.5 tackles and Livesay came back from an injury to total seven tackles and a sack. Kayden McKinney added 7.5 tackles, Mitchell Bienfang 2.5 and Carson Skinner, Zach Martinez and Kasper two apiece.

“Brett Livesay was dinged up from last week and played well defensively,” Crnkovich said. “We didn’t think we were going to have him. He stepped up big time on defense. Carson Skinner made a good first impression. He was getting through the line and keeping our linebackers clean to make tackles.”

Titan Opperman was 6 of 10 passing for 84 yards and three touchdowns and Jaden Penning ran for 44 yards, added 33 receiving and totaled two touchdowns for AGWSR on offense. Opperman also made 6.5 tackles, 4.5 stops behind the line and half a sack, Mads Pettersen added 3.5 tackles and a sack and Chase Harms picked up 3.5 stops plus an interception for the Cougars defensively.

Up next for Collins-Maxwell is a road game against rival Baxter (0-3) to begin 8-man District 5 play.

“I believe if we get our o-line clicking we can compete for a win this Friday,” Crnkovich said. “We have to remember our keys and be able to adjust to situations that get thrown at us. We have to be able to adapt. If we do that, we should be able to compete.”

The game will be a homecoming affair for Baxter and it takes place at 7 p.m. in Baxter.
