After winning yet another conference championship, the North Polk baseball team put 10 players on the all-Heart of Iowa Conference teams in 2018.
North Polk had four players make the all-HOIC first team. Four more Comets were chosen to the second team and two were named honorable mention after helping the team go 12-2 in conference play to beat Saydel by two games for the conference title.
Senior pitcher Jake Johnson, junior catcher Sam Kvidera, senior shortstop Colby Cupp and junior outfielder/pitcher Colten Parkins were the four North Polk players to earn a spot on the first team.
Johnson went 4-1 with a 1.44 earned-run average, 33 strikeouts and just seven walks in 34 innings on the mound during conference games. He also hit .350 with two doubles, six runs and six RBIs.
Kvidera tallied 101 putouts and four assists with just one error in his first season starting behind the plate. He also posted a .278 batting average, with two doubles and four RBIs at the plate.
Cupp delivered a .372 batting average and .500 OBP with three doubles, 11 steals, 11 runs and seven RBIs in conference games. He made 27 assists and 14 putouts in the field.
Parkins went 1-1 with a 1.58 ERA, 27 strikeouts and eight walks in 17 ⅔ innings on the mound against HOIC foes. He also came through with a .344 OBP, one double, eight runs, 10 RBIs and six steals.
The rest of the all-HOIC first team was made up of Saydel’s Maxx Stanton, Cal Gebhart, Craig Garrison and Cash Lee; Gilbert’s Nathan Chasey; South Hamilton’s Mateo Balderas; Roland-Story’s Zach Shadlow; Prairie City-Monroe’s Preston Van Wyk and Greene County’s Ben Wilkins.
Junior pitcher Sutton Sears, senior second baseman Payton Johnson and senior outfielders Reid Summers and Mason Russell made the all-HOIC second team from North Polk.
Sears was 3-0 with a fantastic 0.36 ERA, 19 strikeouts and four walks in 19 ⅓ innings during HOIC games. Johnson hit .304 with a double, triple, 14 runs, 11 steals and four RBIs on offense and recorded 25 assists and 18 putouts against only two errors in the field.
Summers hit .357 with a .571 slugging average, four doubles, one triple, five runs and six RBIs at the plate and made four putouts in the field. Russell posted a .333 batting average, .463 OBP, .455 slugging average, one double, one homer, eight runs and 10 RBIs offensively and registered 18 putouts and just one error on defense.
Rounding out the all-HOIC second team were Gilbert’s Easton Johnson, Matt Barragy and Ben Simodynes; South Hamilton’s C.J. Hewitt, D.J. Klonglan, Cole Berg and Zeke Balderas; Roland-Story’s Nathan Bell and PCM’s Noah Henkenius.
Junior first baseman Jeff Lamp and sophomore Mark Cox were the two Comet players named all-HOIC honorable mention.
Lamp hit .316 with a .500 OBP, three doubles, 10 runs and three RBIs against HOIC competition. He also made 93 putouts and four assists with only two errors in the field.
Cox tallied a .345 batting average, .457 OBP, two doubles, three runs and six RBIs.
