COLLINS - It took a few moments for her to realize it, but Reagan Franzen certainly got excited when she found out she hit the go-ahead home run to spark Collins-Maxwell to a 7-4 victory over Glidden-Ralston in the Class 1A regional finals Monday in Collins.

With her team trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the third inning, Franzen came up to bat with runners on first and second and one out. She got a hold of a Talia Schon pitch and lofted a long shot that cleared the fence in center field to give the Spartans a 4-3 lead.

“I didn’t think it was going to go that far — I guess it just did,” Franzen said. “I didn’t even see it go over. (I was) mostly just screaming the entire way around the bases.”

Alexis Houge provided the initial spark in the inning with a leadoff double to left field. She took third on an error.

Katie Camp reached on an error, but was thrown out trying to reach second, and Mikayla Houge and Hannah Caple both singled to set up Franzen.

Brailyn Tankersley added an RBI double in the fifth inning and Camp and Mikayla Houge both singled in a run in the sixth. Collins-Maxwell needed the offensive production after both starting and ending the game sluggishly in the field.

Glidden-Ralston did a great job executing the bunt game in the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. With two outs, Morgan Koehler and Tianna Janssen both reached on a bunt single and Schon followed with a base hit, followed by a Spartan error on the play to knock in the first two Wildcat runs.

Avery Schlabach delivered another bunt single to push the third run across.

After that rough inning, plus issuing two walks in the first inning, Mikayla Houge was able to settle down in the third inning. She blanked the Wildcats over the next three frames, picking up seven strikeouts and issuing only one hit during that stretch.

“We struggled early with the bunts,” Mikayla Houge said. “But I think we adjusted nicely and were able to start picking up on that and get some outs.”

Glidden-Ralston started to get its timing against Houge in the sixth inning. Whitney Reever singled and scored on an error in the sixth and in the seventh, Houge both walked and hit a batter to make things interesting.

But the Spartan ace dug down deep to force two pop-ups and then get Hannah Whitver to ground out to Franzen at third for the final out.

“We have to win these tight games,” Mikayla Houge said. “It just shows that we can.”

Collins-Maxwell qualified for state in its first year as a program. Collins-Maxwell-Baxter made it to state two years ago, and Mikayla Houge, Camp and Caple were all members of that team.

“It feels awesome,” Camp said. “I was so happy — just running into everybody. I’m really excited to be able to go back there and hopefully achieve a lot.”

Camp reached base all four times she went up to the plate, finishing 4-for-4. Franzen was 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs, Olivia Pasquariello doubled and Ella Kahler and Emma Kahler both singled once.

Mikayla Houge finished the game with an impressive 13 strikeouts to get another win on the mound. She gave up four hits and three walks, going all seven innings.

Schon was the losing pitcher for Glidden-Ralston, giving up four runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and walks apiece in 4 ⅔ innings. The Wildcats ended their season at 19-9.

The Spartans will take a 27-1 record into state next week at the Rogers Sports Complex in Fort Dodge. They will be the top seed in 1A and open against Newell-Fonda (25-13) at 11 a.m. on Monday.
