ALLEMAN - The big bat of Baily Hougham and the strong arm of Sophie Swygman helped North Polk roll to a 12-0 victory over Nevada in four innings Thursday at Alleman.

Hougham was 3-for-3 with a home run, two doubles and five RBIs and Swygman tossed a one-hitter with seven strikeouts and no walks for a Comet team ranked No. 6 in Class 3A.

North Polk scored five times in the first inning and upped its lead to 8-0 through three frames. The Comets plated four runs in the fourth to put the game away, improve to 20-6 and stay alive in the Heart of Iowa Conference title chase with a 11-2 record.

The big blow was a grand slam from Hougham in the first inning.

The Comets had a 1-0 lead with two outs and Nevada pitcher Brooklynn Jensen got two strikes in the count, but Hougham got a hold of a pitch and sent it over the fence in center field.

“I was down in the count so I just kept battling and got all of it,” Hougham said. “It felt amazing.”

It was the first grand slam of Hougham’s career.

Hougham nearly sent another one over the fence in her third at-bat, slamming a rocket that hit the upper part of the fence to just stay in the park.

Swygman made sure Nevada never threatened offensively. Katie Sullivan hit a leadoff single to start the game for Nevada, but the Cubs didn’t get another hit as Swygman finished with seven strikeouts and no walks.

“My rise-ball was working pretty good,” Swygman said. “That helped a lot tonight.”

Swygman also went 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI on offense. Sydney Anderson was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs; Hannah Pals doubled, walked and scored twice and Rebecca Ley, Sydney Albaugh and Hailey Steffen each singled and scored for North Polk at the plate.

Nevada fell to 6-6 in the HOIC and 8-12 overall.

Jensen took the loss against North Polk after surrendering six runs on five hits and four walks in two innings. Mackenzie Garrett threw the other two innings and gave up six runs on on seven hits with one strikeout and no walks.
