ALLEMAN - The North Polk softball team won both of its outings at a triangular with Lynnville-Sully and Pella Saturday in Alleman.

North Polk, ranked No. 7 in Class 3A, defeated Lynnville-Sully 8-4 in six innings and whipped Pella, 10-0, in five frames.

In the victory over Lynnville-Sully, the Comets (3-2)broke open a 4-4 game with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

North Polk came up with eight hits, including four doubles. Hannah Pals was 3-for-3 with two doubles and a pair of runs and Sophie Swygman finished 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs.

Sydney Anderson went 1-for-3 with two runs, Ellie Owen doubled and scored and Trisha Sporra singled and scored against Lynnville-Sully. Swygman was the winning pitcher after giving up two earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and walks apiece in six innings.

Pals turned in a dominant performance on the mound to lead North Polk past Pella. Pals fired a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts and just one walk to get the win.

On offense, the Comets drilled Pella pitching for 15 hits. Owen went a perfect 4-for-4 against Pella with two runs and an RBI and Sporra, Anderson and Sydney Albaugh each had two hits. Sporra also tallied two runs and RBIs apiece, Anderson one RBI and Albaugh three RBIs and a steal.

Pals singled, walked and scored three times. Rebecca Ley had a hit with an RBI and a steal, Morgan Gass singled and scored, Hailey Steffen was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Abby Hill had a single.

CARLISLE - North Polk was hurt by a poor bottom half of the fourth inning in a 7-1 loss at Carlisle May 24.

After taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth, the Comets gave up six runs in the bottom of the inning.

Bailey Hougham doubled and drove in Hannah Pals with the lone Comet run in the top of the fourth. Pals, Ellie Owen and Sophie Swygman each drew walks, and Trisha Sporra and Sydney Albaugh each singled.

Hougham was the losing pitcher after giving up five runs — four earned — on three hits with two strikeouts and three walks in 3 1/3 innings. Swygman allowed two runs — one earned — on two hits with one strikeout and walk apiece in 2 2/3 innings.

INDIANOLA - A strong pitching performance from Hannah Pals wasn’t enough for North Polk in a 3-1 loss to Indianola in a battle of top-10 teams May 22 at Indianola.

Making her debut for North Polk, Pals limited Indianola — the No. 2 team in Class 5A — to four hits and struck out nine batters with just one walk over six innings. The Comets, ranked No. 7 in 3A, provided Pals with seven hits in support on offense, but they could never string anything together.

Sydney Albaugh went 2-for-3, Pals singled and drove in a run and Ellie Owen singled, walked and scored for North Polk on offense. Sydney Anderson, Hailey Steffen and Paige Sandberg each singled once for the Comets.

Sydney Sickles struck out eight and walked one over five innings as the winning Indianola pitcher. Morgan Bolten and Payton Anderson both singled and drove in a run and Emma Yenger singled and scored for the Indians.

ALLEMAN - North Polk opened the season by blanking Heart of Iowa Conference rival Gilbert, 7-0, May 21 at Alleman.

Sophie Swygman fired a three-hitter and the Comets connected for 11 hits on offense. North Polk scored two runs apiece in the second and fourth innings and pulled away in the sixth with three more runs.

Sydney Anderson went 3-for-3 with a double and two runs, Swygman was 2-for-3 with a double and Ellie Owen finished 2-for-4 at the plate for North Polk. Sydney Albaugh, Bailey Hougham and Rebecca Ley each singled and scored and Trisha Sporra also had a base hit.

Swygman had six strikeouts and three walks, going all seven innings for the win.
