MAXWELL - The Collins-Maxwell boys’ soccer team was doomed by a sluggish first half in a 5-1 loss to Nevada April 26 at Maxwell.

Nevada took advantage of a strong wind at its back to dominate possession in the first half. The Cubs really got going midway through the half, scoring all five of their goals over the last 21 minutes.

“We just didn’t have a good first half,” Collins-Maxwell head boys’ soccer coach Crystal Bruntz said. “We just let those first couple get in and we got down on ourselves.”

Anthony Ellis scored two goals and added one assist for Nevada. He netted the first Cub score at the 19-minute, 25-second mark and added another goal 11 minutes later.

Taylor Maiefski also put two balls into the net for Nevada during the opening 40 minutes.

Maiefski sent Nevada’s second goal in the net just three minutes after the first Ellis goal. He also scored the Cubs’ final goal with 50 seconds left in the first half.

Kody Kruschwitz converted a header off a corner kick by Dennis Garcia for Nevada’s other goal. Devin See, Emilio Saldana and Ayden Rhodes each finished with one assist for the Cubs, who improved to 4-2.

Collins-Maxwell fell to 3-4. The Spartans played well over the final 40 minutes — they just dug themselves into too big a hole.

“The second half was great,” Bruntz said. “They didn’t score any, we had one and some more good shots. We kept playing the second half, which was awesome.”

Will Hitchler scored the Spartan goal at the 67:57 mark of the game off an assist from Carter Merryman.
