MARTENSDALE - The North Polk boys’ track team came in second an impressive eight times and added one bronze medal at the Martensdale St. Marys Invitational April 12 in Martensdale.


The Comets scored 81 points to place fourth out of 14 teams. Gilbert won with 133 points, Madrid took second with 104 and South Central Calhoun came in third with 101.


In field events, Caleb Lomica was runner-up in the shot put and Michael Williams placed second in the long jump.


Lomica’s best throw of 47 feet, 1.5 inches placed him behind only the 50-8.25 effort by Madrid’s Landen Burke. Williams peaked with a jump of 19-8 to finish behind the 21-4.5 showing by Gilbert’s Ajay Reed.


Quinten Sommers won silver in both the 110-meter high hurdles and 400 hurdles with respective times of 15.57 seconds and :56.21. Gilbert’s Alex Sharp won both events in :15.39 and :55.31 respectively.


North Polk added runner-up times in four relays — the sprint medley, 4 X 200, 4 X 100 and 4 X 400.


Ryan Fausch, Alec Bolletta, Sutton Sears and J.D. Elefson ran a 1:39.58 in the sprint medley to come in just behind Gilbert’s 1:39.41. In the 4 X 200 Williams, Bolletta, Sears and Elefson clocked in at 1:34.43 to again fall just short of first as South Central Calhoun won in 1:34.12.


Bolletta, Sears, Elefson and Lomica finished the 4 X 100 in :45.53 to fall short of only Albia’s :45.44. In the 4 X 400 Williams, Thomas Jones, Flint Vernon and Chris Banwart completed the race with a time of 3:37.83 to come in behind South Central Calhoun’s 3:36.16.


North Polk also finished third in the distance medley with a time of 3:56.95. South Central Calhoun won in 3:38.89 and Gilbert placed second in 3:51.62.


Fausch, Stocker, Jones and Vernon ran the distance medley for the Comets.

ANKENY - North Polk delivered seven top-eight performances going against mainly larger schools at the Fred Smith Ankeny Hawk Relays April 10.


The Comets placed 14th out of 16 teams with 21 points.


J.D. Elefson had the top individual showing for North Polk by running a third-place time of 23.94 seconds in the 200-meter dash. Ankeny Centennial’s Avery Gates won in :23.67 and Dowling Catholic’s Nate Steenblock just beat out Elefson for second with a time of :23.90.


Quinten Sommers placed fourth in the 400 hurdles and sixth in the 110 highs for North Polk. He completed the 400 hurdles in :57.79 and the 110 highs in :16.16.


Michael Williams was sixth in the long jump with a jump of 19 feet, 10.25 inches and Jacob Wilcox came in seventh in the 3,200 with a time of 10:25.66. Caleb Lomica placed eighth in the shot put with a throw of 47-1.25.


North Polk’s 4 X 400 relay team also took eighth. Williams, Chris Banwart, J.T. Stocker and Thomas Jones ran a time of 3:40.33.
