HUXLEY - It was a day of redemption for the Ballard wrestling team at the Raccoon River Conference meet Saturday in Huxley.
The Bombers, ranked fourth in Class 2A by The Predicament, cruised to their second-consecutive RRC title by crowning six champions and scoring 211 points. The Bombers easily topped Carlisle’s runner-up score of 151 for the title.
“It was a good day,” Ballard head coach Steve Mickelson said. “We wrestled well. There were a few matches in there that I think got away from us. But I’m pleased with the performance overall.”
Jarrett Miller and Colin Anderson came up with huge revenge victories for Ballard to claim titles at 138 and 285 pounds respectively.
Miller earned his championship with an impressive 3-2 win over Perry’s Zach Stewart. Miller is ranked second at 138 in 2A by The Predicament and Stewart entered the meet rated No. 2 in 3A.
Stewart had defeated Miller by the exact same score two nights earlier at a quadrangular meet in Huxley. Miller learned his lesson from that loss, taking a 2-1 lead with a takedown 52 seconds into the second period, then breaking a 2-2 tie with an escape late in the third period.
“It was a super-close match on Thursday — we knew what we had to do, we worked on all that stuff yesterday and I went out there and got that takedown and because we did that extra work, I came out on top in this match,” Miller said. “As soon as he dove I’d go fly and basically just pancake him and it worked — I got my takedown.”
Miller (39-2) earned the 150th win of his career during the meet. He opened with a bye, then defeated Boone’s James Runestead by technical fall, 18-1 to reach the finals.
Anderson (31-13) got two doses of payback.
Anderson avenged an earlier loss to Boone’s Jordan Angle with an 8-6 victory over him in the semifinals. That pitted Anderson against Winterset’s Bradley Tolley — the No. 10 285-pounder in 2A — in the finals.
Tolley also defeated Anderson on the same day he fell to to Angle in a triangular dual at Winterset on Jan. 18. But on Saturday, Anderson quickly turned the tables, pinning Tolley in just one minute, 12 seconds.
“Double payback today,” Anderson said. “A lot of fun.”
In the championship round, Anderson went against his initial strategy of avoiding risk and decided to lay it all on the line early by going for the headlock that got Tolley down on the mat.
“I told myself I wasn’t going to do anything stupid, but I guess I gotta try it,” Anderson said. “The headlock was there, I saw it and went for it.”
Tate Battani (35-7) claimed a title at 160 for Ballard and joined Miller in reaching 150 career wins.
Battani, ranked No. 3 at 160 in 2A, went 2-0 and won both matches by fall. He pinned Carlisle’s Tyler Squires in 2:28 in the semifinals and stuck Carroll’s Parker Klocke in 2:57 during the title match.
Ben Lee showed why he is ranked third at 182 by dominating his two matches to give Ballard another individual champion Saturday.
Lee opened with a bye, then defeated Carroll’s Riley Nehring by technical fall, 17-0. In the championship match, Lee pinned Adel-Desoto-Minburn’s Charles Craigmile in 3:12.
Gerald Gute (170) and Joe Hofbauer (195) were first-time RRC champions for Ballard. Both wrestlers picked up a pin in the semifinals and a major decision in the finals.
Gute pinned ADM’s Trevor Flettre in 4:34 during the semifinals. In the finals, he pulled off a 16-8 victory over Boone’s Tanner Harvey to push his season record to 32-13.
“It’s amazing,” Gute said. “I wish I could have done it a couple other years, but I (got) a chance this year and I capitalized on it.”
Hofbauer stuck Carlisle’s Nate Ramirez in 1:59 during the semifinals, then scored a 17-4 victory over Carroll’s Brennon Kofron to take first and go to 24-14 on the season.
Gage Long (126), Josh Borg (145) and Josh DeTar (220) each placed third for Ballard.
Long pinned Boone’s Kaden Zanoni in 1:56 during the consolation semifinals and edged Winterset’s Trenton Cook by a 3-2 decision in the third-place match. Borg defeated Perry’s Justin Stammer by a 14-6 decision in the quarterfinals, beat Bondurant-Farrar’s Ivan Kruse by a 6-2 decision in the consolation semifinals and won a rematch with Stammer by an 8-2 decision for third place.
DeTar pinned Carroll’s Nathan Reiling in 17 seconds during the quarterfinals, pinned Bondurant-Farrar’s Scotty Hutchinson in 1:31 during the consolation semifinals and stuck Perry’s Alexander Tapia in 2:51 to take the bronze.
Alex Bangs (120) and Jim Chism (132) both placed fourth with a 1-2 record. Bangs pinned Boone’s Jace Schultz in 43 seconds during the quarterfinals and Chism knocked off Perry’s Jacob Nelson by sudden victory, 5-3, in the consolation semifinals.
Ben Hokel took fifth at 152 with a 2-2 record. He pulled off a 9-1 major decision over Bondurant-Farrar’s Cody Hall in the quarterfinals and pinned Perry’s Jared Narber in 4:42 in the third-place match.
Ballard will host a 2A sectional meet next Saturday back in Huxley. The meet begins at noon.
Final team scores: 1. Ballard 211 points, 2. Carlisle 151, 3. Winterset 150, 4. ADM 130.5, 5. (tie) Carroll and Perry 120.5, 7. Boone 113.5, 8. Bondurant-Farrar 79.
