Viola Mapes, 84, of Slater died Thursday, March 28, 2013. Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 2, at Ochiltree Funeral Service in Winterset with burial to follow in the Winterset Cemetery. Viola Mapes was born in Winterset, Iowa on October 13, 1928, the daughter of Alfred R. DeBok and Dorothy L. (Clopton) DeBok. On December 1, 1946, she was united in marriage to Russell Lee Mapes.

In 1966, they moved to Slater where they lived until Russell passed away on December 28, 1992. Viola continued living in Slater until her death on March 28, 2013. Viola and Russell were blessed with three children, Steven, Judy, and Pam. Viola was a member of the Slater United Methodist Women, The Winterset Four, Emanon Club, The Four Leaf Clover Club, the JF Club, and was a founding member of the Friends of the Slater Public Library. She enjoyed crocheting, quilting, square dancing and reading.

She leaves to celebrate her memory, her two daughters, Judy (Steve) McMullen of Shenandoah, Virginia, and Pam Boryca of Huxley, Iowa; two sisters, Elizabeth (Ralph) Jordan of Adel, Iowa and Janice (Pat) Flannery of Indianola, Iowa; six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

Viola was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Steven Mapes; an infant brother, Eugene DeBok; a sister, Betty McKinney; and a grandson, Ryder Mapes.
