Richard “Rick” Carlsen, age 56, of Madrid, IA, passed away suddenly on Saturday, June 16, 2018, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, IA, due to complications of a blood clot. He was born on June 21, 1961, to (the late) Lowell and Carol (Pierce) Carlsen. He graduated from Ballard High School in 1979, and lived in the Madrid area his entire life.

Rick loved fishing, rock hunting with his best friend, Tony Stamper, and morel mushroom hunting each spring. He was very creative and resourceful, always tinkering with engines and making unique home improvements. Rick spent many hours eagerly learning new things on his computer. He also enjoyed helping his mom with yard work, barbecuing, and listening to music.

Rick is survived by his mother, Carol; his youngest brother, Randy (Cyndi) Carlsen; two nieces; several aunts and uncles; and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his dad, Lowell; and his other brother, Mike Carlsen, who are now by his side.

The family greeted friends Monday, June 25 at Slater United Methodist Church, Slater, IA, immediately followed by a memorial service and celebration of Rick’s life.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Rick’s name at the Slater United Methodist Church.
