Josephine (Jo) Elaine Christiansen, age 81, passed away peacefully on October 18, 2017 at Bethany Manor in Story City. Jo was born on November 6, 1935 to Merle and Albert Foster. Jo grew up in Gilbert, Iowa and worked at Bell phone company in her twenties. She spent many an evening roller skating. It was roller skating where she met her future husband, Irvin “Chris” Christiansen. After their marriage, the two lived in Ames. They moved to a farm located near Slater, Iowa, shortly before the birth of their daughter Beth. Jo spent most of her life on the farm, raising Beth, canning tomatoes, walking beans and making sure the Christiansen household ran smoothly. After Beth’s birth, Jo stayed at home and worked various jobs to help support the family. After Chris’s retirement, Jo and Chris became winter Texans, enjoying time with their friends square dancing, and playing Mexican train dominoes and cribbage. In 2015, Jo sold the Christiansen home and moved to Madrid assisted living, eventually moving to Bethany Manor in 2017.

Jo is preceded in death by her husband Irvin (Chris) Christiansen, her parents Merle and Albert and her sister, Mildred Loney.

Surviving Jo is her daughter, Beth Christiansen, her nephew, Rick Christiansen and David Loney and her nieces Susan Lewerke and Dorothy Bartelson. Loving Mother and Aunt, who loved a good meal in the company of good friends. Jo will be missed.

A memorial reception will held in Jo’s honor on November 25, from 10 to 12, at the Soderstrum Funeral in Slater. All who knew and loved Jo are invited to attend.
