An Illinois man was arrested and charged in Story County for allegedly assaulting a Slater resident on Saturday, officials said.

Story County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call in the 700 block of Linn St. in Slater, shortly after noon on Saturday, after they received a call from a neighbor who reported hearing screaming from a woman asking for help.

When deputies arrived at the apartment they found the victim and Xavier J. Lee, 19, of Mundelein, Illinois. While talking to the victim, the deputies described the woman as “very emotional,” and stated the woman was crying, according to court documents filed in Story County District Court.

Story County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Nick Lennie said the victim told authorities that Lee and her had an off-and-on-again relationship, which is why Lee was in Iowa.

The victim stated the defendant and her had gotten into an argument, which led to Lee allegedly strangling her by the neck, attempting to cover her face with a pillow, holding her under hot water in the shower that burned her right side, potentially breaking her right wrist and causing a blood vessel to pop in one of her eyes, Lennie said.

According to the criminal complaint, once the victim got away from Lee she “broke her screen on the front door and yelled for help.”

Officers observed red marks on the victims neck, chest and body, burns on the right side of her body, a “visibly red eye,” and cuts on the victims hands, according to court documents.

Lee was charged with assault with intent to inflict serious injury and assault causing bodily injury or mental illness. If found guilty of all charges he would face a maximum sentence of three years in jail and a fine of $8,125.

Lee was being held in Story County Jail until he posted bond Monday.

As of Monday at 3 p.m., a preliminary hearing had not been scheduled, according to online court records.
