Multiple barrels containing an unknown substance were discarded on a rural road near Cambridge on Monday afternoon, authorities said.

One of the three barrels discovered alongside 597th Avenue, just south of 315th Street, by an employee of the Story County Engineer's Office, was leaking an unknown substance close to a creek, but didn't enter the water, Story County Sheriff's Chief Deputy, Nicholas Lennie said.

“There was some concern with (one of the barrels) leaking and not knowing if was hazmat or what type of material it was,” Lennie said.

The Story County Sheriffs Office and Story County Emergency Management responded with the engineers office and contacted Hydro-Klean to dispose of the barrels.

Fifteen concrete blocks, leaves and other compost items were also disposed nearby and authorities think it's connected, Lennie said.

The Sheriff's Office is encouraging anyone who might know anything about the barrels to contact their office, Lennie said.
