A fire that started in a backyard damaged two homes in Cambridge early Tuesday morning, displacing one family, Cambridge Fire Chief Mat Kahler said.
According to Kahler, firefighters responded to a call of a fire just after 1 a.m. He said the fire began in the backyard of home at 611 Sixth St., the home of the Noftsger family, and spread to a shed and a fence. A bedroom in the home suffered fire damage with smoke damage reported throughout, Kahler said.
The siding on a neighbor’s house melted in the heat from the flames, he said.
Kahler said the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
He said electricity was cut off to the Noftsgers’ home, and the Red Cross provided initial assistance to the family. Kahler said late Tuesday he didn’t know whether the family was staying in a hotel or with other family members.
The Huxley, Maxwell and Nevada fire departments assisted at the scene.
