Last Friday night Marlys Barker, editor of the Nevada Journal and Tri-County Times, received the Master Editor-Publisher Award at the 2019 Iowa Newspaper Association Convention & Trade Show in Des Moines.
Barker was one of three to be honored with the esteemed award this year. The honorees are long-time journalists who have served as editors and/or publishers and have been nominated by Iowa Newspaper Association members and selected by previous Master Editor-Publisher winners.
In order to be considered for the honor, the nominee must have “worked hard, thought soundly, influenced unselfishly, and lived honorably.”
Barker has worked at the Nevada Journal for 27 years. She has served as the editor of the Journal for 26 years and the Times for over 15 years.
Marlys and her husband, Troy, have three children. They have lived in Nevada all their married life.
The Tri-County Times also received two writing awards this year. One was earned by Contributing Writer Lynn Marr-Moore for sports feature on Huxley resident Dea Staker, who played 6 on 6 basketball 25 years ago for Ballard.
The other was a staff writing award for the mayors’ series that ran in last year’s newspaper.
