The Ballard FFA Chapter will be hosting a pie-baking contest and social during the Slater Fourth of July celebration. Pie bakers are invited to enter homemade pies in the contest, set to take place on Tuesday, July 3, at the Slater Senior Center. FFA members will be selling pie by the slice that evening at Nelson Park, beginning at approximately 6:30 p.m.
The contest is open to all pie bakers and will include four divisions: fruit, nut, cream/custard and a youth division.
“The youth division is reserved for any baker under the age of 18,” said vice president Jim Chism. All pies need to be dropped off between 3-3:45 p.m.. Entry forms will be available on site. Contestants are asked to use a disposable 9-9.5” pie tin, and provide a list of ingredients and recipe at drop-off. Entry donation is set at $1 per pie. Entrants can enter no more than one pie per division.
Judging will begin at 4 p.m., with pies being evaluated on overall appearance and taste. Awards will be given to division winners and overall grand champion.
All remaining pies entered will then be sold by the slice and à la mode, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Nelson Park.
“This event not only creates an opportunity for the chapter to be involved in the community, but also will serve as a fundraiser,” said Chism. “We are lucky to send two teams to national competition this fall; this will help cover some of our travel expenses for an unforgettable leadership experience.”
