Cambridge firefighters responded to a report of smoke coming from the Heartland Cooperative grain elevator in Cambridge late Saturday afternoon.

Upon arrival, they determined it was steam being released from a hot spot in the grain stored inside the elevator, said Fire Chief Travis Rhiner.

Rhiner said the lids on the top of the elevator were opened to release the heat, and that the elevators fans were turned off to keep air from being introduced into the elevator.

He said firefighters would monitor the situation over the weekend until Heartland employees return to work on Tuesday.
