There is fun to be had this coming summer at camps offered through ISU Extension and Outreach’s 4-H program. Adventures in nature are only part of the experience young people will have at 4-H camps offered across the state and at the Iowa 4-H Center in Madrid — they’ll also have fun, make friends and learn.
Statewide themed camps
Four statewide themed camps for middle school-age youth will be offered at the Iowa 4-H Center. Depending on the camp selected, youth will explore animals and veterinary science, develop leadership skills, discover science and robotics, or learn how to grow and use local fresh fruits and vegetables for better health.
Bill Beckley, Iowa 4-H camping program specialist with ISU Extension and Outreach, said Iowa State faculty will enrich the campers’ experience. "Iowa State researchers and faculty are contributing to the educational components of the camps so middle school youth can have in-depth experiences with the topics," he said. "At the same time, campers will enjoy all the aspects of camp – the outdoors, recreation and social interactions."
The themed camps are open to any Iowa kid, 4-H and non 4-H, between fifth and ninth grades. Details about the camps and how to register will be available later this winter on the Iowa 4-H Camping website at http://www.extension.iastate.edu/4h/camping. Each state-level camp will accommodate 60 to 100 campers.
County and regional Iowa 4-H camps
In addition to the camps scheduled at the Iowa 4-H Center, a listing of 4-H day and residential camps conducted locally around the state will be listed on the Iowa 4-H camping website. They will be added to the website as they are scheduled.
