Last week, Story County announced that it was accepting applications from persons interested in serving on the County Board of Health for a three-year term.

According to Deb Schildroth, director of external operations and county services, no one is stepping down from the current board; but, she said, “the Board of Supervisors changed the Board of Supervisors member on the Board of Health (Lauris Olson) to an ex-officio status, therefore, creating a vacancy for a new member.”

The current members of the Story County Board of Health include Dr. John Paschen, MD, chair of the board; Mark Speck; Dr. John Kluge, DVM and Louisa Tabatabai.

Wondering if you have the credentials to serve?

According to Schildroth, Iowa Code requires local Boards of Health to have at least five members and one of the members must be a licensed physician (per Iowa Code Chapter 148).

“A general interest in public health is a commonality amongst members, otherwise varying degrees of backgrounds and expertise is welcome,” Schildroth said. Since the board already has met the licensed physician requirement, that opens the possibilities for others who might have an interest.

A county Board of Health has jurisdiction over public health matters within its designated geographic area, according to Iowa Code chapter 137.

When it comes to some of the things that Story County’s board has dealt with, Schildroth shared this: “The Board of Health meets every other month and reports (that they go over) are routinely provided by Environmental Health (wells, septic systems, tanning and tattoo establishments, etc), Public Health (public education, clinics, flu and disease cases, etc.), MICA (dental, WIC) and YSS (substance use, public education in schools, etc.). In the last couple of years, issues at the former Crestview Mobile Home Park were addressed (water quality, solid waste, general health and welfare of residents).”

Crestview, Schildroth said, was one of the board’s most impactful issues in recent months. Other items of impact the board has dealt with, she said, include the smoking ordinance and e-cigarette ordinance.

Serving on the Story County Board of Health is a volunteer position. Meetings are held the first Tuesday of every other month at 2 p.m. at the Story County Administration Building in Nevada. All meetings of the Story County Board of Health are open to the public.
