Hadaway is first-team choice

North Polk had three players selected to the Iowa Newspaper Association all-state baseball teams in 2013.

The Comets put one player on the Class 2A first team, one on the second and another on the third after going 31-5 and taking runner-up in 2A at the state tournament for the second year in a row.

Senior pitcher Jacob Hadaway was named a first-team pitcher after making the second team last year. Hadaway went 7-1 with an earned-run average of 0.73 and 117 strikeouts against just 29 walks in 67 innings. He was 10-1 with a 0.29 ERA, 124 strikeouts and 16 walks in 73 innings a year ago.

Hadaway stepped up his game at the plate this season. He hit .381 with 11 doubles, two home runs, 23 runs and 30 RBI, after producing a .273 average with three doubles, one home run and nine RBI last year.

Joining Hadaway on the 2A INA first team were: Kuemper Catholic’s Chris Halbur and Kolby Hilgenberg; Beckman Catholic’s Joey Lehmann; Council Bluffs St. Albert’s Jake Lewis and Jimmy Hawk; Cascade’s Jared Manternach; IKM’s Casey Berg; Clayton Ridge-Central’s Dylan Preston; Treynor’s Alec Sorenson; Monticello’s Tanner Felton; Wilton’s Cole Crawford and Durant’s Justin Shaffer.

Lehmann was named the all-state captain in 2A by the INA after going 13-0 on the mound with an ERA of 0.47.

Reed Smith made the INA all-state second team outfield in 2A for North Polk. Like Hadaway, Smith was a repeat INA all-state pick as he made the third team a year ago.

Smith hit .397 with five doubles, one triple and one home run. He also led the team with 39 runs and 19 steals, batting from both the leadoff and No. 2 spot in the batting order.

In the outfield Smith made no errors and he threw out four base runners.

Grant Lang was named all-state for the first time as a third-team utility selection in 2A for the Comets.

Lang was an extremely valuable performer both as a pitcher and a catcher.

On the mound Lang went 7-2 with a 1.35 ERA, 74 strikeouts and 27 walks in 51 2/3 innings. In the field, he threw out an impressive seven base runners and only tallied four errors.

Lang also hit the ball well in 2013. He posted a .323 batting average with 12 doubles, three home runs and 27 RBI.
