MAXWELL – A clutch shot in the final seconds gave the Collins-Maxwell-Baxter boys’ basketball team a dramatic 61-60 Heart of Iowa Conference victory over Roland-Story Friday in Maxwell.

CMB trailed 60-58 with possession of the ball in the final seconds.

With Roland-Story taking away a couple of CMB’s top offensive options, senior Austin Moorman got a look. The veteran guard made the most of it, canning a 3-pointer in the final 10 seconds to give his team its eighth victory in nine games after starting 0-2.

CMB (8-3, 5-3) had to hold off Roland-Story (5-4, 5-3) down the stretch. The Raiders built a 31-23 lead at the half and still led by six after three quarters, but Roland-Story netted 22 points in the fourth quarter to nearly pull off the comeback.

A slight edge in shooting accuracy and superior rebounding proved to be the difference makers for CMB.

The Raiders shot 48 percent from the field, made 6 of 13 3-pointers and 13 of 16 free throws. The Norsemen made 44 percent of their field goals, 2 of 12 3-pointers and 16 of 23 free throws.

CMB won the rebounding battle by a 30-18 margin, including a 6-4 edge on the offensive glass.

Bryce Kemp was CMB’s leading scorer. The 6-5 forward turned in a great all-around performance, producing 17 points, 11 rebounds, five assists, three blocks and three steals.

Moorman finished with 15 points and two steals and Seth Balke added 12 points and six assists. Joey Nissen chipped in seven points; Tommy Galloway had five points, five rebounds and two assists and Zach Samson pulled down five rebounds and dished out two assists for the Raiders.

Zach Hovick scored a game-high 22 points for Roland-Story. Ben Clark also had a strong game for the Norsemen with 19 points, six assists, six steals and four rebounds and Adam Shorkey chipped in 12 points and five rebounds.

BAXTER – Collins-Maxwell-Baxter faced little resistance from Colfax-Mingo Jan. 7 in Baxter as the Raiders outscored the Tigerhawks by double figures in each of the first three quarters on their way to a lopsided 63-20 victory.

CMB held Colfax-Mingo to a single-digit point total in every quarter. By halftime, the Raiders held a 34-10 lead, and that margin swelled to 39 points by the end of the third quarter.

The Raiders shot an impressive 58 percent from the field and they forced the Tigerhawks into a dreadful 16-percent shooting night. CMB also posted a solid 29-19 rebounding advantage.

Bryce Kemp had 16 points on 7 of 8 shooting from the field and he also registered five rebounds, five assists, three steals and one block for CMB. Zach Samson added 13 points on 6 of 7 shooting and he recorded five rebounds and three assists.

Joey Nissen finished with nine points, Tommy Galloway had eight along with three assists and Seth Balke chimed in with six points and four rebounds. Austin Moorman dished out four assists and Patrick Girard blocked three shots for the Raiders.

Jacob Lietz had seven points, one assist and one steal for Colfax-Mingo.
