CMB pulls off two one-run victories

ALLEMAN – The big bat of Payge Jurgens helped Collins-Maxwell-Baxter upset North Polk in both games of a softball doubleheader June 18 at Alleman.

Jurgens hit a grand-slam home run in each outing to enable her team to squeak out two one-run victories over the then 13th-ranked team in Class 3A.

CMB prevailed in the first game by an 8-7 score. The Raiders took a shocking 8-0 lead through five innings, and then withstood a huge Comet rally.

The Raiders broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the third inning. In the fourth they loaded the bases to force out starting North Polk pitcher Mallory McDonald and bring in Comet ace Rebecca Sieve.

Jurgens took Sieve’s first pitch over the fence in left field to clear the bases and give the Raiders a 7-0 cushion. CMB added another run in the fifth, and it turned out the Raiders absolutely had to have that run as the next inning saw North Polk explode for seven runs.

The seven-run outburst could’ve been even bigger as North Polk still had two runners on base when CMB pitcher Heather Jessen forced McDonald to fly out for the final out of the sixth.

After CMB failed to score in the bottom of the sixth, it looked as if the Comets were headed for a dramatic comeback win. But Jessen kept North Polk off the scoreboard in the top of the seventh – allowing only one base runner – to complete the Raider victory.

Jurgens was 2-for-2 with a walk, two runs and four RBI to pace CMB on offense. Cheyanne Warne was 2-for-3 with a triple, run and RBI and Megan Ritter singled, scored and drove in two runs. Taylor Ross singled and scored twice, Becky Williams singled and scored, Abbie Haupert had a single and Cortney Ubben walked and scored once.

Jessen allowed seven unearned runs on six hits with one strikeout and no walks to pick up the big win.

McDonald took the loss after allowing six runs – three earned – on four hits with two walks and no strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings. Sieve gave up two runs on four hits with two strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings.

Audrey Ley was 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run and Makayla Burt finished 2-for-4 with a run and RBI to lead North Polk on offense. Brandi Rose was 1-for-4 with a run and RBI, Lilly Lomica singled and scored, Rebecca Rimathe scored and drove in a run and McDonald and Reilly Franzen each scored once.

In the nightcap, Jurgens was again the hero in a 6-5 CMB victory.

This time Jurgens struck early – belting her second grand-slam of the evening in the top of the second inning to put CMB up 4-0.

North Polk scored a run in the second. After CMB countered with a score in the top of the third, the Comets came back with two runs in their half of the inning to pull within 5-3.

The scored stayed that way until the sixth, when both teams scored a run. After Sieve kept CMB off the board in the top of the seventh, North Polk plated a run in bottom of the inning as Sieve doubled home Makayla Burt with two outs.

But Sieve was left stranded as the game ended when Warne forced Rose to fly out.

Warne was the victorious pitcher in the second game as she gave up five runs – four earned – on eight hits with four walks and one strikeout in seven innings. Sieve took the loss after allowing six runs – just one earned – on 10 hits with four strikeouts and no walks in seven innings.

Jurgens went 2-for-3 with four RBI in the nightcap. Warne was 2-for-4 with a double and Abby Applegate doubled once.

Ross finished 1-for-3 with two runs and Williams was 1-for-3 with a run, steal and RBI. Ubben singled and scored, Ritter singled and drove in a run, Haupert was 1-for-4 with a steal and Elizabeth Jones scored once for the Raiders, who improved to 6-12 overall and 3-6 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.

North Polk fell to 11-5 overall and 7-3 in the HOIC. McDonald went 2-for-4 with a double and a run, Burt finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and Sieve doubled in a run to pace North Polk at the plate.

Macy Gill went 1-for-3 with a walk, run and two steals; Franzen singled and scored; Ley doubled in a run; Bekah Ward scored once and Carly Madson drew a walk.
