COLLINS – The Collins-Maxwell-Baxter baseball team couldn’t shake off a rough first two innings in an 8-2 loss to Greene County Monday in Collins.
The Raiders gave up five runs in the first inning and three in the second, falling behind 8-0. Pitcher Levi Anderson settled down after that and he and Zach Hartgers combined to shut out the Rams the rest of the way.
But CMB couldn’t get enough offense going, falling to 0-3 overall as well as in the Heart of Iowa Conference.
Anderson gave up seven earned runs on nine hits with five walks and four strikeouts in five innings to take the loss. Hartgers allowed no hits and one walk with three strikeouts in two scoreless innings of relief.
The good news on offense is that CMB broke a 17-inning scoreless streak by scoring its first run of the season in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Raiders added another run in the sixth.
CMB totaled five hits on the night.
Zach Samson was 2-for-3 and he scored both Raider runs. Seth Balke also went 2-for-3, Aaron Haupert had a single and Brady Stover, Darrien Sadler and Logan Cory each drew a walk.
Reed Ostrander was the winning pitcher for Greene County. He allowed two earned runs on five hits with nine strikeouts and three walks in five innings.
Matt Paulsen threw two scoreless innings of relief with three strikeouts for Greene County. Ostrander was 1-for-3 with a walk, steal and two runs, Alex Rasmussen doubled and drove in two runs and Dylan McConnell went 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI for the Rams on offense.
