CMB earns first victory

STORY CITY – A balanced, high-powered offense combined with improved defensive play allowed the Collins-Maxwell-Baxter football team to roll to a 42-7 non-conference road win over Roland-Story Friday in Story City.

Coming off a 44-27 home loss to Gilbert in its season opener, CMB needed a big night out of its defense versus Roland-Story. The Raiders received that, limiting the Norsemen to 129 yards rushing and just 163 total yards.

"I thought our linebackers did a great job coming down hill all night," CMB head coach Rob Luther said. "We also tackled much better."

The tough play didn’t just show up on the defensive side for CMB. The Raiders ran for 240 yards on 34 carries and they complemented that with over 200 yards through the air, finishing with 442 total yards on the night.

"It was good to see our line come out and be physical," Luther said. "We made some big plays early to get confidence and we ran the ball hard and controlled the line of scrimmage. But we need to finish drives and not let penalties hurt us. We still had a lot of mistakes, especially mental."

Bryce Kemp was the big-play spark plug for CMB in the first half.

With four minutes, 44 seconds left in the first quarter, Kemp hauled in a 60-yard touchdown pass from Zach Samson to give CMB a 14-0 lead. He added a 67-yard touchdown less than three minutes into the second half to give the Raiders a 21-0 lead, and the score remained that way until the end of the half.

In the third quarter Zach Huffaker came through with two touchdowns for CMB.

Huffaker completed the opening drive of the second half with a 5-yard touchdown run. Roland-Story responded with its only score of the game a – 15-yard touchdown pass from Zach Hovick to Josiah Soderstrum – but 19 seconds after the Norse touchdown, Huffaker came back with a 62-yard scoring reception.

Gabe Schabillion put the finishing touches on the victory for CMB with a 2-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

Samson completed 7 of 9 passes for 171 yards with two touchdowns and one interception and he also ran for 55 yards and CMB’s first score – a 1-yard touchdown midway through the first quarter. Kemp caught two passes for 84 yards to go along with his one big touchdown run and Huffaker caught four passes for 90 yards and added 54 yards rushing on nine carries.

Schabillion had 50 yards rushing on 11 carries. Brady Stover completed one pass for 24 yards, made one reception for nine yards and he also ran the ball once for eight yards.

On defense Nick Little had 11 tackles, one stop behind the line and a fumble recovery for the Raiders. Logan Cory made six stops and recovered a fumble, Samson had five tackles and a fumble recovery, John Engle had five stops plus a sack and Kemp, Austin Moorman, Charles Robertson and Clayton Weltha chipped in five tackles apiece.

Soderstrum ran for 44 yards on 12 carries and caught two passes for 20 yards to lead the Norsemen, who fell to 0-2. Hovick completed 5 of 14 passes for 34 yards and Andrew Schlatter ran for 34 yards for Roland-Story.

CMB takes a 1-1 record into the start of Class 2A District 6 play this Friday against Bondurant-Farrar (1-1). The game will take place in Baxter and it is set to start at 7:30 p.m.
