Stover strikes out 13 in 8-0 loss

ALLEMAN – Defensive miscues proved the difference in the Collins-Maxwell-Baxter baseball team’s 8-0 loss to East Marshall in Class 2A district quarterfinal play Saturday in Alleman.

Raider pitchers Brady Stover and Zach Hartgers only allowed two hits all game. But error problems, plus five walks, allowed East Marshall to cruise to victory as CMB gave up three runs in both the third and fourth frames and two in the sixth.

The Raiders were also hurt by a poor showing at the plate. They only mustered two hits themselves and they received no walks all game.

Stover was the losing pitcher, despite a strong 5 1/3 innings of work.

Stover gave up all eight runs, but none of them were earned. He finished with an impressive 13 strikeouts on the night and allowed all five East Marshall walks and both Mustang hits.

Hartgers threw the final 2/3 of an inning and didn’t allow a hit or a walk.

Stover and Aaron Haupert both singled once for the only CMB hits. Haupert also came away with two steals for the Raiders, who finished the season at 1-22.

Nick Long picked up the win for East Marshall. Long struck out nine in his two-hit shutout.

Caleb Benzing was 1-for-2 with two walks and one run, steal and RBI apiece for the Mustangs at the plate. Long also singled once; Nick Mommer scored twice and had one walk, steal and RBI apiece and Nate DeBont drove in a run and scored once for East Marshall.

JEFFERSON – Collins-Maxwell-Baxter put forth a tremendous effort in its final regular season game July 11 against Greene County in Jefferson, but the Raiders came up just short, suffering a 5-4 setback.

CMB looked as if it was in big trouble after the first inning as Greene County had built a 4-1 lead. But the Raiders regrouped to shut out the Rams over the next two innings and then they put three runs on the board in the top of the fourth to tie the score.

But just as it appeared the momentum was all on the Raiders’ side, the Rams came back with a run in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game.

CMB hurler Seth Balke continued to throw strong over the final three innings as he kept the Rams off the scoreboard. But the Raiders also failed to score during that stretch as they ended up taking the loss to finish 0-18 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.

Balke gave up just two earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks in a strong complete-game effort to take the loss. On offense, CMB totaled three hits and they also totaled three steals.

Zach Samson went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI and Brady Stover was 2-for-4 with a run and a steal to lead the Raiders on offense. Balke finished 1-for-4 with two runs and one RBI and steal apiece and Nick Carroll and Levi Anderson each singled once.

Logan Cory stole a base and scored a run and Darrien Sadler picked up a free pass as the other CMB contributors on offense.

Dylan McConnell went 2-for-3 with a run and two RBI and Matt Paulsen finished 1-for-2 with a walk, run and RBI to lead Greene County on offense. Colton Fitzpatrick was the winning pitcher for the Rams after going all seven innings and giving up four unearned runs with nine strikeouts and one walk.

MADRID – Collins-Maxwell-Baxter outplayed Madrid for six of seven innings in a non-conference game at Madrid July 10, but the Raiders couldn’t shake a poor stretch in the bottom of the fifth inning as they fell in a 4-3 squeaker.

CMB took a 3-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning. The Raiders went up 1-0 in the first inning, both teams scored once in the third and CMB added another run in the top of the fifth.

But Madrid came back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to go in front and CMB was unable to get a runner across the plate in the final two innings to end up on the short end of the stick.

The Raiders totaled six hits on offense. Levi Anderson was 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, Darrien Sadler went 2-for-3, Brady Stover singled and scored and Logan Cory also had a single.

Seth Balke and Aaron Haupert both stole a base and scored once to account for the other Raider runs. Anderson was the losing pitcher as he went the distance and gave up four earned runs on 10 hits with one strikeout and no walks.

Nigel Niemier earned the win in relief for Madrid as he gave up no runs on three hits with two strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings. Nick Novotny doubled and drove in two runs, Josh Henriksen went 2-for-2 with an RBI, Alex Schieltz singled and knocked in a run and Sinjun Harshbarger ended up a perfect 3-for-3 with a run for the Tigers.

COLLINS – A rough night at the plate resulted in a 6-0 loss for Collins-Maxwell-Baxter versus Colfax-Mingo July 8 in Collins.

CMB only recorded one hit all game off Colfax-Mingo pitcher Austin Yoakum. The Raiders did pick up four walks and come away with three steals, but the lack of hits prevented them from pushing a run across in their final home game of the season.

Levi Anderson delivered CMB’s only hit as he singled once in three at-bats. Brady Stover, Seth Balke, Zach Hartgers and Nick Carroll each picked up a walk for the Raiders and Balke, Hartgers and Zach Samson stole one base apiece.

Hartgers was the losing pitcher as he gave up four earned runs on nine hits with two strikeouts and walks apiece. Stover threw 1 1/3 scoreless and hitless innings in relief with one strikeout and walk apiece.

Colfax-Mingo scored twice in the second inning and added two more runs in the fourth. The Tigerhawks tacked on one run apiece in the fifth and sixth frames to pull away.

Yoakum struck out nine to go along with his four walks in seven innings to earn the win. Connor Hainer homered and drove in two runs; Tim Blood doubled and scored two runs; Caleb Anderson had a double, run and RBI and Jake Alexander doubled and scored for the Tigerhawks.
