Comets top Nevada for HOIC win

SOLON – The North Polk softball team went 1-3 at the Solon Invitational Friday and Saturday.

On Friday the Comets defeated Iowa City Regina by a 4-0 score and suffered a 2-1 loss to Keokuk.

In the victory over Regina, the Comets scored three times in the fourth inning and coasted home behind great pitching from Rebecca Sieve and an errorless defensive performance.

Sieve and Brandi Rose both singled in a run and Macy Gill doubled and scored for North Polk in the fourth. In the top of the seventh, Makayla Burt singled in Audrey Ley for the final Comet run.

Gill finished 2-for-3 with a walk and a run, Rose went 2-for-2 with an RBI, Sieve was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Burt drove in a run and finished 1-for-3. Ley singled and scored, Mallory McDonald had a hit and Rachel Rimathe and Jocelyn Plowman each scored once for the Comets.

Sieve threw all seven innings and she tossed a two-hitter with three strikeouts and no walks.

In the loss to Keokuk the Comets were hurt by three errors as Sieve only allowed three hits.

Keokuk scored the game’s first run in the bottom of the third inning as Brooke Wade hit a solo home run. North Polk tied the score in the top of the sixth when McDonald singled home Lilly Lomica.

But Keokuk answered with the eventual winning run in the bottom of the sixth as Alyson Hughes doubled in a run following a Comet error.

North Polk got one runner on base in the seventh when Burt singled, but courtesy runner Bekah Ward was forced out at second to end the game.

Sieve took the loss despite giving up just three hits. She allowed one earned run in seven innings with three strikeouts and one walk.

Lemon was the winning pitcher as she finished with five strikeouts and no walks in seven innings.

On Saturday North Polk was dealt another heartbreaking 2-1 setback, this time to Center Point-Urbana.

The Comets fell behind 1-0 after one inning, but evened the score in the top of the third when Makayla Burt singled and scored on an error. The score remained 1-1 until the bottom of the seventh.

In the Center Point-Urbana half of the seventh, Brittany Buelow hit a leadoff double and courtesy runner Sarah Mackey scored the winning run on an error.

Sieve took the loss, despite holding the Stormin’ Pointers to just two hits. Sieve tallied four strikeouts and one walk in 6 1/3 innings.

Sieve was also 1-for2 at the plate and she had an RBI on the Comets’ lone run in the third. Burt singled and scored, Reilly Franzen was 2-for-3 and Gill and Ley each had one hit.

North Polk’s other game on Saturday was an 11-1 setback in five innings to a Solon team rated third in Class 4A.

The Comets gave up at least two runs in each of the first four innings and their only run came in the second inning.

McDonald was the losing pitcher as she allowed 10 runs – seven earned – on 10 hits with three walks and no strikeouts in four innings. Sieve gave up one run on one hit.

Lomica went 2-for-3, Brandi Rose was 1-for-2 with an RBI, Burt scored and Franzen walked twice for the Comets. Miranda Hochstetler allowed one run on three hits with four strikeouts and two walks in four innings to earn the win for Solon.

The two losses on Saturday put North Polk’s season record at 17-7.

ALLEMAN – North Polk was dealt a close Heart of Iowa Conference loss versus Saydel June 27 at Alleman as a seventh-inning rally fell one run short in a 4-3 setback.

North Polk entered the bottom of the sixth inning trailing 3-2. Macy Gill walked and Makayla Burt singled to start off the Comet half of the sixth and Rebecca Sieve hit a ground out to put runners at second and third.

Brandi Rose then stepped up and hit a clutch single to score Gill with the tying run. But Burt was thrown out at home and the Eagles then got Rose out trying to reach third to prevent the Comets from taking a lead into the seventh inning.

In the top of the seventh, Hayley Jensen singled with one out and she was driven home on a single by Danielle Bianchi. That proved to be the winning run as North Polk went down in order in the bottom of the inning.

Rebecca Sieve gave up four runs – three earned – on eight hits with four strikeouts and one walk in seven innings to take the loss. Annika Hofbauer was the winning pitcher for Saydel as she allowed three runs on five hits with three walks and no strikeouts.

Rose went 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI, Lilly Lomica finished 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, Gill and Carly Madson both walked and scored and Burt and Sieve each singled once for North Polk on offense.

Katelyn McEachron was 2-for-4 with one run and RBI apiece and Lizzy Miklus doubled and scored to lead Saydel.

The loss put North Polk at 12-4 in the HOIC.

ALLEMAN – North Polk had little trouble completing a season sweep of Nevada June 24 at Alleman as the Comets used three strong innings to overwhelm the Cubs by a 13-1 score in four innings.

North Polk gave up one run in the top of the first inning, but answered with three in the bottom of the frame. The Comets plated four more in the second and erupted for sixth in the fourth to end the game early due to the 12-run rule.

The Comets pounded out 13 hits as a team and they took advantage of five Nevada errors. Rebecca Sieve went 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI, Mallory McDonald was 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs and RBI apiece and Lilly Lomica finished 2-for-4 with three runs, two steals and an RBI to lead the way for North Polk.

Macy Gill went 2-for-4 with two runs, Makayla Burt finished 2-for-4 with one run and RBI apiece, Brandi Rose ended up 1-for-2 with one run and an RBI and Audrey Ley also recorded a single, run and RBI. Carly Madson walked, drove in a run and scored; Reilly Franzen chipped in one run and RBI apiece and courtesy runner Bekah Ward crossed the plate once for the Comets.

Sieve was the winning pitcher as she allowed one earned run on two hits with five strikeouts and one walk in four innings. Alex Van Dam surrendered 10 earned runs with two walks and no strikeouts in four innings, and she was hurt by five Cub errors in the field.

Victoria Johnston doubled in the lone Cub run and Megan Anderson singled for the other Nevada hit. Tanner Messerli also walked and scored for the Cubs.
