Comets top Tigerhawks in HOIC play

ALLEMAN – The North Polk softball team split two games at the Comet Invitational Friday as the Comets defeated Odebolt-Arthur/Battle Creek-Ida Grove and fell to Sergeant Bluff-Luton.

North Polk rallied from a 6-4 deficit against OA/BCIG to pull off a 7-6 victory over the Falcons in six innings.

North Polk jumped out to a 4-1 lead after four innings. Reilly Franzen hit an RBI double and Makayla Burt smacked a two-run single in the third inning, and in the fourth inning Lilly Lomica hit an RBI single for the Comets.

In the top of the fifth inning, North Polk had two costly errors and OA/BCIG capitalized by scoring five runs to move in front. North Polk failed to score in the bottom of the inning, but they kept the Falcons off the board in the top of the sixth to stay within striking distance.

In the bottom of the sixth Lomica and Mallory McDonald came up huge.

With two runners on base and one out, Lomica connected for a huge double to score both runners and tie the game. McDonald followed with a single to score Lomica with the winning run as the game was called after six innings.

But the fifth inning proved to be trouble for North Polk as the Comets gave up six runs in the top of the inning and couldn’t answer in the bottom half. North Polk trailed 11-3 going into the bottom of the sixth and gave one last-ditch effort to make a big comeback.
