Jackson, Greene lift Comets to 3-2 win
COON RAPIDS – The North Polk baseball team made the most of its only game of the week Saturday as the Comets defeated Pleasantville by a 3-2 score at the Coon Rapids-Bayard tournament.
North Polk scored twice in the second inning and held a 2-0 lead until the bottom of the fifth, when Pleasantville tied the score. But the Comets came right back with the go-ahead run in the sixth and Cole Jackson slammed the door on the Trojans as North Polk improved to 5-1.
Brandon Cory singled, moved to second on a bunt by Clay Cory and scored on a single by Russell Greene for North Polk’s first run in the second inning. Greene then stole second and scored on a double by Jacob Hadaway.
In the top of the sixth Wyatt Houge singled and Brandon Cory reached safely on a bunt to put runners on first and second. Houge moved to third on an error and scored on a sacrifice fly from Greene.
Jackson came on with two outs in the fifth to get North Polk out of a jam and he retired all seven batters he faced on the night with four strikeouts to earn the win.
"We played well at times, but we’re not in any kind of rhythm as a team," North Polk head coach Dave Middleton said. "It’s like starting over when you have seven days with no games. Cole was solid and we needed that; it set the tone for the rest of the game."
Grant Lang was the starting Comet pitcher and he gave up two earned runs on two hits with four walks and six strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings. Reed Smith added a single for North Polk on offense.
