CMB’s Samson makes second team
Four members of the North Polk baseball team were named first-team all-Heart of Iowa Conference after helping the Comets win the conference title again in 2013.
Jacob Hadaway, Grant Lang, Reed Smith and Brandon Cory made the all-HOIC first team as they played a big part in North Polk going 16-2 in the HOIC to claim their 11th conference title in 12 years.
Hadaway was the lone unanimous pick on the first team. The all-state ace was chosen at pitcher after going 5-0 with an earned-run average of 0.82, 63 strikeouts and 13 walks in 34 1/3 innings versus conference foes.
Hadaway also hit .444 with two home runs, 15 runs and 13 RBI against HOIC competition.
Lang was named as a first-team catcher. The junior was outstanding on defense, throwing out three runners in as many attempts and recording a .972 fielding average.
At the plate Lang hit .340 with three home runs, 16 runs and 14 RBI.
Smith was named a first-team outfielder after hitting .436 with four doubles, 23 runs and 10 steals in the conference. He also tallied 10 putouts, three assists and no errors in the outfield.
Cory totaled 83 putouts, three errors and one assist at first base as a first-team infielder. He also hit .319 with two doubles, one triple and 10 RBI.
The rest of the all-HOIC first team was made up of: Saydel’s Brandon Hodges, Alex Gustafson and Chas Nekola; Nevada’s Colynn Black; Gilbert’s Jared Gescheidler; Colfax-Mingo’s Jake Alexander; South Hamilton’s Devin Howard and Roland-Story’s Zach Hovick.
Three Comets also made the all-HOIC second team.
Junior Cole Jackson was a second-team pitcher. He went 3-1 with an ERA of 0.71, 41 strikeouts and seven walks in 29 2/3 innings against HOIC competition.
Shortstop Russell Greene made the second-team infield as a junior. Greene hit .400 with nine doubles, 17 runs and 15 RBI and he had 17 assists, 11 putouts and just two errors in the field during conference games.
Grant Schiltz also made the second team in his junior campaign. Schiltz was chosen to the outfield after hitting .367 with 11 runs, 12 RBI and no errors in the HOIC.
Collins-Maxwell-Baxter put one player on the all-HOIC second team. Junior first baseman Zach Samson hit .386 with four doubles, one home run, seven runs and seven RBI in conference games and he also posted a .988 fielding average with 71 putouts.
Both CMB and North Polk had two players named all-HOIC honorable mention.
Seniors Zach Hartgers and Aaron Haupert were chosen from CMB. Hartgers had six walks, five RBI and two runs in conference play and Haupert hit .192 with a double and six runs.
Seniors Wyatt Houge and Clay Cory were the honorable mention picks from North Polk.
Houge posted a .300 average with 15 RBI and he registered 31 assists, 24 putouts and just two errors at second base. Clay hit .319 with 11 runs, 10 RBI and seven steals and he made 12 putouts and three assists in the outfield.
