DALLAS CENTER – An awesome pitchers’ duel between Ballard and Dallas Center-Grimes saw the Bombers come up huge in crunch time to knock off the No. 1 team in Class 4A in a 1-0 battle June 17 in Dallas Center.

Ballard, then ranked seventh in 4A, received a brilliant pitching performance from Kenzie Ihle to counter DCG’s all-state hurler Paige Lowary. Ihle struck out 10 batters and only allowed two hits and walks apiece to earn a very impressive shutout victory and hand the Fillies their second loss in four games, after they started off 18-0.

Lowary tossed a three-hitter and she struck out 11 batters and walked four in a losing effort. The dominant pitching by both pitchers kept the game scoreless through six innings, but Ballard found away to break through against Lowary in the top of the seventh.

Ellie Godwin was the offensive hero for Ballard as she drove in courtesy runner Madison McInroy for the eventual winning run in the seventh. Godwin, Katie Ahrenholtz and Ellen Huxford were each 1-for-3, with Godwin and Ahrenholtz both singling and Huxford connecting for a double to account for Ballard’s only hits.

Brooke Mallon did a great job getting on base, despite not recording a hit, as she walked in all three of her plate appearances. Annie Stolte also drew a free pass and courtesy runner Olivia Hall stole a base for the Bombers.
