MAXWELL – The Ballard girls’ soccer team closed the first half strong to pull away from Collins-Maxwell-Baxter en route to a 6-1 victory over the Raiders Monday in Maxwell.
Playing in frigid conditions, the two teams played even ball for the first 15 minutes.
Ballard got on the board first when Emily Knittel found the back of the net off a ball from Rachel Watters at the 15-minute, 43-second mark of the first half. CMB answered right back, however, as Katie Ziesman got a ball by Bomber keeper Maggie Raes at the 16:23 mark to tie the score.
With 19 minutes to go in the opening half, Tabby Snyder put Ballard in front to stay with an unassisted goal. Knittel tacked on her second score less than five minutes later as Ballard went on to take a 3-1 lead at the break.
Knittel and Watters continued their hot play over the final 40 minutes to sew up the game and help Ballard improve to 2-2 on the season.
Watters scored an unassisted goal with 23:40 left in the second half, and with 8:42 to go Knittel, connected for her third goal off an assist by Sarah Hugee. Watters iced the game by netting her second score with 40.4 seconds left on the clock.
Raes ended up with five saves for Ballard in the victory. CMB fell to 0-2 with the loss.
