CMB suffers 44-27 loss to Gilbert

BAXTER – The offense was there, but the defense wasn’t for Collins-Maxwell-Baxter in its season opener against Gilbert Friday in Baxter.

The Raiders were unable to slow down the Tigers’ potent ground attack all game in suffering a 44-27 setback.

Gilbert took charge in the second half. The Tigers led 17-14 at the break and then they scored three straight touchdowns in the second half to build a 44-14 advantage.

CMB gave a valiant comeback effort in the fourth quarter. But the deficit was too much to overcome.

Gilbert ended up rushing the ball 50 times for 365 yards compared to just 134 yards on 22 carries for CMB. The dominance on the ground allowed the Tigers to dominate time of possession all game.

"We completely lost the line of scrimmage," CMB head coach Rob Luther said. "We gave up over 450 yards of (total) offense and that is unacceptable. We have to be more physical. We have to play with our pads down and get off the ball better. It was a frustrating night."

Gilbert quarterback Jared Gescheidler ran for 135 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries and he was also 5 of 8 passing for 115 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions.

In the first half Gescheidler had touchdown runs from five and 19 yards out. Jacob Huston added a 38-yard field goal to cap the Tigers’ scoring at the half.

In the third quarter Gescheidler helped Gilbert break the game open. He found Wyatt Rhodes on a huge 57-yard touchdown strike and also ran one in from nine yards out.

Cole Drzycimski capped the scoring for Gilbert with a 30-yard scoring scamper in the fourth quarter.

"Hats off to Gilbert for taking it to us in the second half," Luther said. "They wore us down and brought a lot of different looks that confused us."

Zach Becker added 110 yards rushing on 20 carries for Gilbert and Drzycimski ran for 82 on just three attempts. Rhoads had the one big touchdown grab and Darin Rinehart made one reception for 31 yards.

CMB came up short despite a strong offensive showing. Behind the great play of dual-threat quarterback Zach Samson, the Raiders racked up 370 total yards and didn’t have a turnover.

"We had 370 yards and no turnovers – not bad for week one," Luther said. "But we still were not crisp offensively."

Samson completed 16 of 27 passes for 240 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions. He also led CMB in rushing with 78 yards on 11 carries.

In the second quarter Samson hooked up with 6-5 receiver Bryce Kemp for touchdown passes of 6 and 51 yards. In the fourth quarter Samson found Brady Stover on a 12-yard scoring strike and Austin Moorman on a 9-yard touchdown toss.

Kemp made three catches for 62 yards, Moorman had four grabs for 47, Stover hauled in three receptions for 21 and Hunter Gunderson caught two passes for 43. Zach Huffaker led CMB in receiving with four catches for 67 yards and he also ran the ball nine times for 50 yards.

On defense Clayton Weltha had a busy night with 15 tackles. Kemp added 10 stops, Logan Cory made nine tackles, Charles Robertson and Nick Little each recorded eight and Moorman tallied seven.

Little also picked up one sack and Jordan Coughenour recovered a fumble for the Raiders on defense.

CMB looks to regroup this Friday against Roland-Story. The Norsemen also dropped their opener, losing at South Hamilton by a 22-0 score.

"We’ve got to get better in a hurry," Luther said. "Roland-Story is going to be physical as well and if we aren’t ready it will be the same thing all over again."

The Raider-Norse game will start at 7:30 p.m. in Story City.
