Girls place second

JOHNSTON – The North Polk boys’ cross country team won its round with top Heart of Iowa Conference rival Gilbert Sept. 12 at the Johnston Invitational.

The Comets and Tigers were the top two boys’ programs among eight scored teams in Class A at Johnston. The final tally saw North Polk win the team championship with 53 points, just nosing out Gilbert’s 55-point effort in an exciting race between the two clear favorites to win the HOIC championship in October.

Gilbert had the top two individual runners in Thomas Pollard and Wesley Greder, but North Polk displayed superior depth at Johnston. Both teams had five runners place in the top 20, but three Comets finished in the top 10 to two for the Tigers.

Peter Smith was the fastest individual Comet as he completed the boys’ 5-kilometer course in 16 minutes, three seconds to finish just behind Greder’s runner-up time of 15:58. Pollard won in 15:46.

Ryley Sandberg came in sixth for North Polk with a 16:50 showing and Reed Smith added a 10th-place time of 18:06. Christian Berglund was fourth on the team and 14th overall with a time of 18:26 and Nick Kibby ran the final scored time for North Polk with a 20th-place effort of 18:52.

Matthew Turk just missed the scoring cut for North Polk as he came in 21st at 19 minutes flat. Corey Richards also ran varsity for the Comets and he did well, clocking in at 19:06 to place 25th.

Saydel was a distant third in the boys’ Class A team standings with 81 points and Pella Christian came in fourth out of 10 scored teams with 134 points.

In the girls’ competition North Polk had 78 points to place second out of eight scored teams. Gilbert easily won the girls’ title with 22 points.

The Comet girls were led by Sybbie Sears, Samantha Sinclair and Rachel Zimmerman.

Sears ran a 4-kilometer time of 16:37 to place third, coming in just 10 seconds behind the runner-up effort by Gilbert’s Carly Rahn. Grace Gibbons easily won the girls’ individual championship with an impressive time of 14:52.

Sinclair just missed making the top 10 individually. She crossed the finish line in 17:53 to place 11th, just one second behind Gilbert’s Caisha Johnson’s 10th-place time.

Zimmerman placed 15th overall. She completed the course in 18:14.

Tessa Subra and Amanda Schwab were North Polk’s other scored runners. Subra finished 26th in 19:31 and Schwab was right behind with a 27th-place time of 19:32.

Emerson Sears and Olivia Patterson also ran varsity for North Polk. Emerson was 31st in 19:42 and Patterson placed 36th in 20:07.
