CARROLL – The North Polk boys’ cross country team won another meet championship and the Comet girls came in third in Class B at the Kuemper Catholic Invitational Saturday at the Swan Lake State Park in Carroll.
The Comet boys, ranked second in Class 2A, finished with a score of 29 points after producing four top-10 runners, including three of the top four. Odebolt Arthur/Battle Creek-Ida Grove was second in the boys’ standings with 55 points and South Central Calhoun was third out of eight scored teams with 60 points.
Peter Smith gave North Polk the boys’ individual champion in Class B. The No. 6-rated individual runner in 2A completed the 5-kilometer course in 16 minutes, 37.38 seconds to beat the runner-up time of South Central Calhoun’s Ryan Daisy by over 53 seconds for the easy win.
Ryley Sandberg came in third overall and Reed Smith placed fourth for North Polk. Sandberg ran a 17:38.12 to finish just seven seconds behind Daisy and Reed crossed the finish line in 18:12.59.
Christian Berglund also placed in the top 10 for the Comet boys. Berglund just missed the top five as he took sixth in 18:41.28.
Nick Kibby was the final scored Comet runner as he clocked in at 19:25 to finish 16th.
In the girls’ race North Polk – rated 13th in 2A – finished with 75 points to beat Underwood by 15 points for third out of nine scored teams. Griswold easily won the girls’ title with 37 points and South Central Calhoun took second with 66 points.
Sybbie Sears continued to lead the Comet girls individually. Sears completed the girls’ 4-kilometer course in 17:12.38 to place third overall.
Griswold’s Rebekah Topham and Alyx Flippin were the top two individual runners in the girls’ race. Topham dominated the field in running a 15:08.97 and Flippin clocked in at 16:58.66.
Samantha Sinclair gave North Polk two top-10 individual runners. Sinclair crossed the finish line in 18:09.88 to place right at 10th.
Rachel Zimmerman came in 15th for North Polk with an 18:27.44 showing. Olivia Patterson stepped up with a 23rd-place time of 18:50.75 and Emerson Sears was the final scored Comet runner after running a 19:08.75 to place 28th.
