Raiders top Van Meter at home

COLLINS – The Collins-Maxwell-Baxter softball team ran out of steam after three innings in a 7-2 loss to Saydel Monday in Collins.

The score was knotted at 2-2 going into the third as both teams scored twice in the first inning. But Saydel plated the go-ahead run in the third inning and the Eagles tacked on two runs apiece in the fifth and sixth frames to pull ahead to stay as CMB went flat offensively after the first inning.

Cheyanne Warne had a huge game at the plate in a losing effort for CMB. She was a perfect 4-for-4 with a double and home run and she knocked in both Raider runs.

Megan Ritter, Abbie Haupert, Cortney Ubben, Becky Williams, Taylor Ross and Payge Jurgens each picked up a single for CMB. Ritter scored the other CMB run and she also walked once and Jurgens and courtesy runner Mikayla Eslinger each stole a base.

Warne was the losing pitcher. Warne was hurt by errors as only two of Saydel’s runs were earned and she struck out eight batters and gave up 11 hits and two walks.

The loss put CMB at 4-12 on the season and 1-6 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.

STATE CENTER – Collins-Maxwell-Baxter split two games at the Rose Festival tournament Saturday as the Raiders downed Des Moines Christian and came up short against West Marshall.

CMB pulled off a 7-3 victory over Des Moines Christian. One big inning was the difference as the Raiders plated six runs in the fifth inning.

CMB lead 7-1 going into the seventh and Des Moines Christian scored twice in the bottom of the inning, but it was far too little, too late, for the Lions.

Becky Williams was 2-for-4 with a double, run and three RBI and Megan Ritter finished 3-for-4 to pace CMB’s 12-hit attack on offense. Mackenzie Schmitz went 2-for-4 with a run and Abbie Haupert was 2-for-3 with a walk, run and RBI.

Abby Applegate added a single, two walks and an RBI, Cortney Ubben finished 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI and Brittany Peterson singled and scored for the Raiders. Heather Jessen was the winning pitcher as she allowed three runs – two earned – on six hits with six walks and three strikeouts in seven innings.

Emma James took the loss for Des Moines Christian as she had 10 strikeouts and three walks in a losing effort. James also doubled in a run, Olivia Rasmussen hit an RBI single and Maddie Wagner was 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Lions.

CMB wasn’t able to overcome a late drought on offense in a 6-4 loss to West Marshall. The Raiders scored twice in the first and third innings, but went scoreless the rest of the way.

West Marshall was also held without a run in the final three innings. The Trojans scored twice in the second inning and benefited from a four-run third to claim the victory.

Jessen took the loss after allowing six earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and walks apiece in 2 1/3 innings. Cheyanne Warne threw the final 3 2/3 innings and she gave up just one hit and struck out four batters against two walks.

Warne also went 2-for-2 with two steals and two runs and Haupert smacked a pair of doubles and drove in three runs for the Raiders. Applegate and Peterson each added one single, Schmitz walked twice and Ritter scored two runs and stole a base for CMB.

Kallie Malloy allowed four earned runs and she had four strikeouts and two walks in seven innings to pick up the victory for West Marshall. Georgia Porter went 3-for-3 with a double, two runs and an RBI and Karis Gibbs hit two doubles and drove in three runs for the Trojans.

DES MOINES – Collins-Maxwell-Baxter started slow and never got into full gear in a 5-0 road loss to Grandview Park Baptist Friday.

The Raiders gave up four runs in the first inning and another in the second. They settled down on the mound and defensively after that to blank the Defenders the rest of the way, but they never found a way to break through on offense.

CMB finished with six hits – all singles. Mackenzie Schmitz was 2-for-4 and Megan Ritter, Cheyanne Warne, Abby Applegate and Abbie Haupert each collected one hit.

Ritter also stole a base and Haupert walked once. Warne was the losing pitcher as she allowed five runs – three earned – on eight hits with five strikeouts and four walks in six innings.

COLFAX – A solid finish wasn’t enough to overcome a rough second inning for Collins-Maxwell-Baxter in an 8-5 loss to Colfax-Mingo June 12 in Colfax.

The Raiders outscored the Tigerhawks 4-3 over the final four innings. But after each team scored a run in the first, Colfax-Mingo busted out for four runs in the second to build a 5-1 lead, and CMB couldn’t make up the deficit.

Raider catcher Abby Applegate was 2-for-4 with three RBI and Mackenzie Schmitz finished 2-for-4 with a run, steal and two RBI for CMB in the loss. Megan Ritter singled and scored twice, Taylor Ross singled and scored and Cortney Ubben collected a walk and a hit.

Cheyanne Warne took the loss for CMB as she gave up four earned runs on nine hits with six walks and five strikeouts in six innings.

Amy Russell struck out eight batters and walked six in seven innings to earn the win for Colfax-Mingo. Sydnie Fahrney was 2-for-3 with a double, walk and two runs and RBI apiece and Jena Teed also drove in two runs for the Tigerhawks.

COLLINS – Defense and pitching did the job for Collins-Maxwell-Baxter in a 3-2 non-conference victory over Van Meter June 11 in Collins.

All of the scoring was done in the first inning. After that pitching dominated as Cheyanne Warne sewed up the victory for the Raiders by tossing six-straight shutout innings.

Warne threw a five-hitter with four strikeouts and three walks. The Raiders played stout defense behind her to keep the Bulldogs off the scoreboard over the last six innings.

Warne also doubled in a run in the first inning for CMB. Mackenzie Schmitz and Megan Ritter both singled and scored and Schmitz also walked and stole a base; courtesy runner Mikayla Eslinger scored the other Raider run. Taylor Ross also picked up a hit and Brittany Peterson drew a walk for CMB.

Kila Carbine took the loss for Van Meter, despite not allowing an earned run as she struck out five and walked three in six innings. Bailey Richards doubled, tripled and recorded one run and RBI apiece and Ali Flaherty doubled and scored for the Bulldogs.
