Raiders drop two in doubleheader at Nevada

COLLINS – It was a rough day at the office for the Collins-Maxwell-Baxter baseball team versus South Hamilton July 3 in Collins.

The Raiders gave up at least five runs in two different innings and they finished with just one hit in a 13-0 loss to the Hawks in six innings.

CMB fell behind 2-0 in the third inning and two innings later the Raiders surrendered five runs. The flood gates then fully opened in the sixth as South Hamilton tacked on six more unanswered runs to end the game on account of the 10-run rule.

Brady Stover was the losing pitcher for CMB. He surrendered seven runs – six earned – on four hits with eight strikeouts and five walks in 4 1/3 innings.

Nate Bishop gave up one run on one hit with a walk in one inning, Zach Hartgers allowed two runs on one hit with two walks in 2/3 of an inning and Zach Samson was tagged with three runs on three hits for CMB.

Aaron Haupert singled for the lone CMB hit. Stover, Seth Balke, Samson, Hartgers and Nick Carroll each drew a walk and Samson also stole a base for the Raiders, who fell to 1-18 overall and 0-16 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.

Lane Heinlein went 3-for-3 with a home run and six RBI and J.D. Rader finished 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBI for South Hamilton at the plate. Heinlein was also the winning pitcher after giving up just one hit with eight strikeouts and three walks in five innings.

NEVADA – Collins-Maxwell-Baxter hung around early in both contests of a doubleheader with Nevada July 2 at Billy Sunday Field in Nevada, but the Raiders fell apart late each time, suffering 10-3 and 8-2 losses respectively.

In the opener CMB only trailed 1-0 through three innings. But the Raiders allowed four runs in the fourth inning, two in the sixth and three in the seventh.

Seth Balke and Zach Hartgers gave up 12 hits combined in the loss. Balke took the setback after surrendering nine runs – six earned – and striking out two with one walk in six innings; Hartgers allowed one earned run in the seventh.

Zach Samson had a quality game offensively with two doubles, two steals and one walk, run and RBI apiece for CMB. Aaron Haupert and Brad Ritter both singled and scored and Hartgers and Hunter Gunderson singled and drove in a run for the Raiders.

Logan Cory and Levi Anderson each added a walk and a single and Nick Carroll singled and stole a base for CMB.

Tanner Hanson was 2-for-4 with a triple and four RBI, Patrick Stephenson singled and drove home three runs and Chad Jamison finished 2-for-3 with two runs to lead Nevada. Tyler Shafer picked up the win after giving up two earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts and walks apiece in five innings and Brook Thompson threw the other two innings, striking out two with one walk for the Cubs.

In the nightcap, CMB jumped out to a 2-0 lead through the first inning. But Nevada scored three times in the second, added three more unanswered runs in the fourth plus two the sixth to pull away as the Raiders failed to score over the final six innings.

Samson kept up his hot hand at the plate by going 2-for-2 with an RBI. Ritter singled, walked and scored; Seth Balke stole a base and scored; Hartgers drove in a run and Anderson walked once for CMB.

Nate Bishop was handed the loss in the second game after giving up six runs – just two earned – on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks in 3 1/3 innings. Anderson threw 2 2/3 innings and allowed two earned runs with one strikeout.

Zach Anderson picked up the win for Nevada after going all seven innings and giving up two unearned runs with four strikeouts and three walks. Dannon Anderson was 2-for-3 with a double and two runs and RBI apiece, Dan Ralston went 2-for-3 with two runs and a double, Colynn Black knocked in two runs and Zach Anderson and Owen Shawgo both doubled for the Cubs.
