MADRID – The Collins-Maxwell-Baxter volleyball team capped off a successful week with a 3-2 showing at the Madrid Invitational Saturday in Madrid.
The Raiders defeated Colfax-Mingo, Madrid and Colo-Nesco and both of their losses came at the hands of West Marshall. The quality showing at Madrid put CMB at 5-2 for the week and the Raiders improved to 10-7 on the season.
CMB swept Colfax-Mingo and Colo-Nesco. The Raiders edged Colfax-Mingo by scores of 21-17 and 21-19 and they whipped Colo-Nesco by 21-12 and 21-14 margins.
In the victory over Colfax-Mingo the Raiders had a .118 kill-efficiency rate and .951 serving rate with eight aces.
Abbie Haupert totaled nine kills, two blocks and one dig and Abbey Appelgate recorded five kills, five digs, two assists and one ace for CMB against Colfax-Mingo. Payge Jurgens finished with two kills and five aces on a 14 of 15 serving effort, Katie Ziesman put up five digs and two kills and Mackenzie Schmitz dished out 10 assists and registered three digs.
CMB finished with a .137 kill-efficiency rate versus Colo-Nesco. The Raiders also went 37 of 41 serving with 10 aces.
Haupert again led CMB in kills and blocks with seven and two respectively and she also topped the team in digs with 10. Jurgens had four kills, four digs, one block and five more aces on a 10 of 11 serving performance and Ziesman stepped up with seven digs, three kills, three aces and one assist.
Appelgate added nine digs, two aces and one kill, Alex Hlavacek recorded two digs and one kill and Schmitz dished out 15 assists and came through with six digs against Colo-Nesco.
The Raiders needed three sets to dispose of Madrid. They won a 26-24 thriller in the opening set, suffered a 25-15 loss in the second and claimed a 15-8 victory in the rally game.
CMB had a .181 kill-efficiency rate and nine aces versus Madrid. Haupert had another big match with 12 kills, six digs and one ace and Jurgens also performed well, picking up seven kills, four digs, two blocks and two more aces.
Hlavacek led CMB in serving against Madrid by going 13 of 14 with three aces and she added five digs and two kills. Ziesman had a quality outing versus the Tigers with eight digs, five kills and two aces, Appelgate recorded eight digs, two assists, one kill and one ace and Schmitz finished with 19 assists, 10 digs and one kill.
The Raiders were swept both times in their losses to West Marshall
West Marshall handed CMB losses by scores of 21-13 and 21-17 in the first outing between the two teams. The Raiders recorded a .222 kill-efficiency rate and went 27 of 31 serving with two aces.
Jurgens led CMB in kills with six and Haupert totaled three kills, two blocks and three digs in the loss. Ziesman also had three kills and three digs; Appelgate finished with five digs, two kills and one ace; Hlavacek picked up two kills, two assists, one dig and one ace and Schmitz handed out 11 assists and contributed one kill and three digs.
In the second match between the Raiders and Trojans, CMB fell by scores of 25-8 and 25-10. The Raiders had a .152 kill-efficiency rate and went 25 of 29 serving with three aces.
Haupert came through with seven kills, six digs and one ace; Appelgate produced 14 digs, four kills and one assist and Ziesman tacked on six digs; five kills and one assist. Jurgens added three kills, four digs and two aces; Schmitz finished with 15 assists and four digs and Bekah Pearson topped the team in digs with 17.
BAXTER – Collins-Maxwell-Baxter evened up its Heart of Iowa Conference record by whipping Saydel in a three-set sweep Oct. 1 in Baxter.
CMB cruised to victory in each set, winning by convincing 25-9, 25-12 and 25-8 margins to improve to 3-3 in the HOIC. The Raiders had a solid .259 kill-efficiency rate with 23 kills and eight errors in 58 attacks and they also picked up an impressive 12 aces on a 68 of 72 serving effort.
Abbie Haupert and Payge Jurgens both had a big night at the net for CMB. Haupert recorded 12 kills, four digs and two blocks and Jurgens ended up with eight kills, four digs and two blocks.
Haupert and Jurgens also combined to go a perfect 30 of 30 serving with seven aces. Jurgens was 19 of 19 with five aces and Haupert went 11 of 11 with two aces.
Katie Ziesman added two kills, four digs and one ace and Abbey Appelgate wound up with one kill, nine digs and one ace. Alex Hlavacek picked up two digs, one assist and one block, Mackenzie Schmitz had 17 assists, six digs and a perfect 13 of 13 serving night, Toni Spencer produced seven digs and Bekah Pearson added five.
